EXTERIOR
The Mk2 GTI’s clean, understated shape has become one of the most recognisable designs of its generation, and few colours suit it better than metallic Oak Green. Deep and rich, it gives the 16v a particularly appealing presence, especially in desirable 3-door, big bumper spec. The car has recently been treated to a full glass-out repaint and so the finish is overall excellent. The refresh was carried out sympathetically with the intention of keeping as many original trims and features as possible. The factory BBS alloy wheels have also been fully refurbished and are complemented by a set of brand new Avon tyres.
INTERIOR
Simple, driver-focused, and built around excellent ergonomics, the Mk2 GTI’s interior needs no embellishment to create a sense of occasion. This particular example retains all the character and atmosphere of a very original car, and other than some patina to the original rainbow cloth upholstery in line with the mileage, everything presents to a great standard. The sports seats are comfortable and supportive, the steering wheel has a good texture with minimal shine, and we’re pleased to report that the electric windows, sunroof, and immobiliser all operate correctly.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The 1. 8-litre 16-valve engine rewards being worked through the rev range and delivers the engaging, analogue driving experience for which the Mk2 GTI has become so celebrated. The car has recently undergone a thorough shakedown and cambelt change providing additional reassurance for its next owner. Lifting the bonnet, the engine bay remains in very solid, original condition with no signs of accident damage or previous poor repair.
HISTORY FILE
This lovely Oak Green 16v GTI was supplied new by Colindale Service Station in January 1991. It has now driven 85k miles in the hands of only 5 registered keepers. Recent work includes a glass-out repaint, alloy wheel refurbishment, all-new tyres and a detailed mechanical shakedown including timing belt replacement, new spark plugs, cam cover gasket, brake master cylinder, brake flexi hoses, gearshift bushes, Sachs front shock absorbers, engine mounts, driveshafts, front wheels bearings, etc. The result is a GTI that has been prepared for continued enjoyment rather than simply presented for display.
The accompanying paperwork includes the original service booklet and owners’ manual, a thick raft of invoices dating back to when the car was new, MOT certificates back to 1993, and the current V5C registration document showing only 4 former keepers.
