Description
Robin Hood Super Spec
SVA’d July 2008, 08 REG. Mileage approximately 8, 000, MOT’d until Nov 28th 2013 currently on SORN
Cycle wings and nose cone in Oxford Blue with matching hood and side screens
This is the super spec which was supplied as a complete kit from Robin Hood with unused parts, the only exception being the differential/ back axle which are reconditioned. The engine is a 2 litre DOHC 16v fuel injected Rover "T" series giving approximately 140 BHP, the gear box is a Ford 5 speed MT75 unit, both had zero miles at build.
The super spec chassis is stronger and superior to the lower spec 2B unit and was designed from the outset with wishbone front suspension (unlike the 2B) offering better handling. Chassis tubes are 38mm diameter 2mm wall thickness stainless steel and all body panels are stainless steel. Any brackets and fasteners are also stainless. The scuttle, bonnet and nose are all separate items unlike the alligator setup of the 2B, with the bonnet and nose cone being removable. The car has been built with cycle wings but will also come with a pair of unused "clam shell" wings and mounting brackets.
As a qualified marine engineer with many years’ experience in building kit cars (7 in total) and having designed and built my own car, there are many areas (too many to mention) where I have improved on Robin Hood’s original intentions due to the quality of items supplied, workmanship and problems encountered.
Below are some, but not all of the improvements I have made during the build and whilst in use:
•3. 9 diff changed to a 3. 6 as this gives much better ratios (3. 9 diff included as spare).
•The radiator is a purpose made unit using Land Rover Defender top and bottom tanks with a five tube core, absolutely no cooling problems, electric cooling fan fitted.
•Oil cooler and remote filter (remote filter a necessity for ground clearance, sump modified for same reasons).
•Uprated lower wishbones, custom made and fitted.
•The exhaust is insulation wrapped under the bonnet.(Neat Job)
•Cobra sports seats giving better support than the Vectra Recaro’s (Overstuffed Armchairs) as supplied.
•Stainless steel fuel tank instead of supplied production car unit.
•Brake master cylinder reservoir relocated from Robin Hood spec, back to original Ford location due to reported problems from other owners.
•Dash and instrument panel custom made.
•Hand brake has been tunnel top mounted instead of passenger foot well, far stronger and more convenient.
•Custom made luggage area cover.
Though a Catherham lookalike it is not a replica, the performance is good, road holding excellent, it is fun to drive at half the price. Another benefit over the Catheram and Westfield is it is far roomer and my son at 6’ 6” and myself with a mature fuller figure fit in no problem.
