Description

VW Golf GTI 8V Mk 2. The car was first registered in May 1990 and is an original ‘big bumper’ model.

It was supplied by Mann Egerton in Ipswich (now Wolsey VW) and the first owner kept it until late 1997 before trading it in with 100, 154 miles on the clock.

The second owner bought it in January 1998 but soon needed a larger car and sold it to me in October 1998 over 15 years ago. I still have the page from Autotrader dated 16 October 1998 with the colour advert.

I used it as an everyday car for about a year and then a succession of company cars meant that it could become a cherished weekend car. Since then it has always been garaged and rarely been out in the wet.

Consequently the original tornado red paintwork gleams with no dents or dings and the original 14 inch BBS have no scuffs or kerb damage.

The car comes with a full documented history including:

- All invoices and receipts from new
- All of the old MOT certificates
- All of the tax discs from 1998 onwards

I recently changed jobs and started using the car again on a daily basis for a few weeks during which it was doing about 120 a week and never missed a beat. It has now been retired again and has just been treated to a professional valet.

Everything works including the Multi-Function Computer and there were no advisories on the last MOT.

The car is completely standard although I did fit a weighted, short shifter kit to the gear linkage shortly after I bought the car which reduces the gearstick movement to that of a modern car.

Full details area as follows:

- Mileage: 124, 251
- Taxed until 31 July 2014
- MOT runs until 31 July 2014
- Bridgestone tyres all round with approx 5mm on the fronts and at least 6mm on the rears.
- Cambelt & tensioner replaced at 122, 834 miles
- Front discs & pads replaced at 117, 383 miles
- Laserline alarm and Autoblock immobiliser
- Original windscreen – this picked up a chip many years ago but has not got any worse and is not an MOT issue.
- Original rear number plate showing that it was supplied by Mann Egerton in Ipswich
- Genuine VW stainless steel exhaust system with polished tailpipes.
- Genuine VW set of floor mats which look as good as new.
- I replaced both headlamps with OE Hella units not longer after I bought the car but all the other lights are original.
- Rocker cover recently powder coated
- I had head the headlining replaced to a better than new standard in Dec 2012.
- Gear linkages replaced in Sept 2012
- 2 new injectors fitted in July 2012.
- Fuel injector pump replaced in Oct 2011
- Knock sensor replaced in Sept 2011
- The drivers seat had some wear to the bolster when I bought the car and I had it professionally repaired with a leather patch let in.
- Never been used as family car and so rear seats are virtually unused.
- Spare wheel has never been used.
- Kenwood radio cassette unit
- No leaks from the sunroof.
- Runs on unleaded fuel
- Can be insured on a classic car policy – currently costs me about £80 a year.

This is a cult classic which is fun, reliable and can cope with modern traffic.

The car is good enough to show (I took it to Whitenoise last year) and gets admiring glances wherever it goes.

It is very rare to find one as original as this and virtually unique to find one with such a comprehensive history.
