CAVALIER/ OPAL ‘CENTAUR’
Crayford’s second Vauxhall / Opel project the ‘Centaur’ convertible was introduced in 1978. The Centaur had a very strong padded ‘T’ bar top similar to the Triumph Stag and first used by Crayford on the Cortina Mk. 4/ 5.
The Centaur was type approved by the Ministry of Transport. Like the Cortina project this type approval was to tie in with the model being sold on, to Magraw Engineering, who produced 118 convertibles,
Here is a unique opportunity to own this beautiful Centaur, the pictures tell the story of the looks and rarity of this Classic. Now for the breakdown.
The shell has been fully stripped down and mounted on a spit for restoration, New chassis legs were formed and installed , new outer sills, Jacking points, rear arch repair sections and any other minor tin work cut out and replaced, The shell was then etched primed underneath plus inner rear arches, inner wings , 3M stone chip applied then primed and done with 2 pack paint with a flex additive. Inside of the wings was treated to the same process before wings mounted on car.
The outside of the shell, engine bay, doors, boot, 400 bonnet (RallyTech), 3 piece spoiler bumper and side skirts was prepared then after priming sprayed in Opel 454L 2 pack white.
The Engine and gearbox is a reconditioned 2. 0 injection engine and box, with new complete clutch. The engine bay had been dressed with a custom solutions radiator infill stainless panel and washer bottle,
Braking system all new lines and flexible s, Audi vented front discs and Vectra callipers.
Suspension spax adjustable with uprated and lowered spring height giving great handling. New drops links, bushings , ball joints where installed were any signs of wear / perishing noted.
Rear axle was reconditioned with new bearings etc
A new bespoke Mohair hood was hand made for the Centaur and refurbished frame costing £2000
The interior is AS NEW, a complete Opel Manta 400 interior, carpets, door cards, rear quarter, dash and seats. Steering wheel and Boss is a new genuine Moto-Lita.
There is a high end sound system approx £1600 fitted to the car with Polk Momo Comps , A soundstream rubicon amplifier and a Nakamichi head unit giving superb clear sound without distortion. With the hood down no road noise nor engine noise just superb sound quality. Amplifier and cross overs mounted in boot to the back of a panel made to cover tank.
Lights are standard rear and square fronts as the twins just made the car look to busy when fitted, clear indicator lens fitted to front bumper.
The bonnet is a Genuine rallytech 400 bonnet, Exclusive front and rear bumpers, side skirts nd rear spoiler. Wheels a deep dish mimms which set of the look of the car perfectly.
