** 1947 Singer 9 4-seater roadster for sale**
Offered for sale is this 1947 Singer 9 roadster which is believed to and appears to be all complete. The singer nine roadster was introduced in 1939 and was Singers first attempt of breaking the traditional pre war cars including racers, so in 1939 they announced the making of a new four seater sedate saloon which was aimed at a niche market. The new nine was neither a placid saloon nor a sports car, but it was of a sporting nature with plenty of power, lively performance and attractive lines as well as an attractive asking price of £169. Fitted with a single S. U downdraft carburettor the car was a 1074cc and 36b. h. p engine at 5000rpm. Coupled to a three speed gearbox and a rear axle ratio of 5. 43:1 the roadster was an incredibly low geared machine and was capable of 65mph, it was capable of near 40mph in 2nd gear. Production was to continue until the outbreak of WW2 when production stopped but was to start again in 1946 after the war had ended. The new Roadster remained largely unchanged with a few refinements here and there mainly cosmetic. With four seats and a decent size boot the new Nine was an instant appeal and could cope with the day to day tasks of everyday driving but would double up to be a good family tourer at the weekend.
This 1947 model like may others has been a victim of frost damage in the past leading to a cracked block and head. The block has since been repaired but the head is yet to do. I am happy to discuss what sort of prices it will cost to get head either welded or stitched along with pressure testing. The car was exported direct from the UK in 1947 to Madeira where it was purchased by a doctor (original bill of sale for proof) and used as an every day car. It was then sold to a hotel manager who used it as a weekend car and was garaged throughout his ownership. The car was then imported back to the UK in 1979 where it would sit down Nr Cornwall for the best part of 30 years (with engine failure). The car has never been registered in the UK and is still on its Madeira number plates. The lengthy process of registering the car has been almost completed with engine and chassis numbers all having been confirmed by the SOC (Singer owners club) confirming that the car is a genuine 1947 Singer and is registered on there books as departing for Madeira in 1947. As a consequence of spending a while abroad the car has a surprisingly good chassis and frame. The chrome work has slightly suffered the most noticeable part being the front grill. The interior is like new with all original clocks and gauges present complete with two original sets of ignition and boot keys. The hood is in very good condition and looks to be original, there are no noticeable tears. The car has been dismantled and all parts including gearbox are outside of the car on the bench (hard to find one with its original three speed transmission). The car is easily moved and will push onto a trailer. PLEASE NOTE ENGINE AND GEARBOX HAVE BEEN REMOVED. Complete with detailed history.
A rare chance to own a forgotten British roadster as well built if not better than cars of its time such as the MG TC, Morgan roadster and other Morris cars.
