The Ferret/ Siata is a beautiful lightweight sports race car with period history from the 50's. The car is being sold as is and is a complete car with spare parts. Peter Dawson who originally built this Ferret was a very colorful character with some serious automotive credentials. One of his accomplishments was the construction and engineering of the Summers Brothers " Goldenrod" land speed record holder. The Goldenrod was propelled by 4 Chrysler hemi engines to a 409 MPH world record for naturally aspirated engines. During that event, Peter helped Burt Munro to set the world speed record on a streamline Indian motorcycle. In 1958 Peter Dawson studied race car building with Colin Chapman at Lotus in the UK. Peter Dawson then designed and built this special constructed sports racer. Dawson built 4 signature race cars bearing his name. The Ferret # 001 ( for sale here) was his first built of the lightweight variety race car series. This Ferret #001 utilized a Siata 300 BC engine, suspension, front end, wheels, brakes and original Borrani wires. Most parts of the Ferret were from a donor Siata 300 BC. It was Ian Mueller who wrecked the Siata 300 BC while racing at Meadowbrook in 1958. The Siata suffered a massive brake failure resulting in running out of track then coming upon an embankment resulting in a rollover. As luck would have it, Peter Dawson and Ian Mueller teamed-up to create the Ferret/ Siata in order to participate in the late 50's road racing scene. Ferret # 001 is beautifully built. The cockpit is skinned in sheet magnesium formed over a square tubular space frame. It should be noted that magnesium was also used for the floor, engine shielding, rocker panels, front& rear bulkhead along with the monoposto removable passenger cover.
The front bonnet and rear bonnet are hand formed lightweight aircraft aluminum riveted to the inner structure. The Siata engine is a race prepared 748cc with the distributor attached to the end of the high lift camshaft. There are many more exclusive details to this vehicle that I can supply upon inquiry.
