Description
1973 Lotus Elan plus 2S 130/ 5
The Elan is fitted with the big valve 126 bhp 1588cc twin cam engine which keeps good temperature, oil pressure and is free of knocks and rattles. 126bhp in a car that weighs sub-900 kgs so makes for a very exciting driving experience.
The Elan S 130/ 5 is the ultimate evolution of the breed. Tony Rudd an ex-BRM engineer had developed a big-valve head which liberated a thumping 126bhp.
In all, 5200 Plus 2?s left the Lotus?s factory by the time the Plus 2S 130/ 5 bowed out in December 1974.
The bodywork and paint are in good condition plus the interior is complete and also in good condition. All gauges with the exception of the clock all function as they should.
New Spyder Chassis fitted in 1984.
Car was subject to a complete engine and gearbox rebuild in 1985 undertaken by the renowned engineer Miles Wilkins courtesy of Practical Classics as the then owner had won the magazines competition. The photographs and story as told by Miles are contained in Practical Classics Magazine Volume 6 issues 9 and 10 which I have a copy of. I have owned the car for over 9 years but sadly it has had very little use as my career meant I spent the vast majority overseas. Now that I am retired I have even less time to drive it ?.. 6 grandchildren see to that.
During my ownership the car has been looked after by renowned Lotus specialists Steve Williams Sports Cars, GST Performance and since we moved home Classic Sports Cars (ex Paul Matty but still managed by Tim Garrington).
The car had a complete restoration 1984/ 1986 as evidenced by numerous receipts.
i) Mileage just short of 80, 000 which looking back at the history, MOT?s and receipts appears correct. When my wife and I decided to part with the car we asked Tim Garrington of Classics Sports Cars to undertake a complete service and refresh of the car.
ii) Previous owners 7 albeit the log book shows 8 as our friends at the DVLA seem to have added me again when we moved home.
iii) Car first registered in March 1973.
Genuine car, not concours condition but nevertheless certainly a car to be proud of. Looking at the invoices the car has been a Garage Queen since 1992 with extremely limited mileage. In my ownership the car has been kept in a garage under a Carcoon dehumidifier.
