Description

1931 Plymouth cabriolet - A vehicle with history Interesting bodywork - Robust model - Enduring engine When Walter Chrysler created the Plymouth brand in 1928, he probably had no idea that it was this brand that would almost save the group from the dramatic consequences of the 1929 crisis. Its name came from the port created by the "Pilgrim Fathers" who landed in 1620 on the coast of what was to become Massachusetts, hence the reproduction in the brand's badge of the "Mayflower" that took them there. Walter Chrysler decided to reserve the most affordable models in the range for Plymouth, with four-cylinder engines instead of the six-cylinder engines of Chrysler, then De Soto or Dodge. This did not mean that these cars were oversimplified. On the contrary, they offered modern technology, adopting hydraulic brake control and the "floating" engine before other marques in the 1930s, whose flexible mountings eliminated vibrations and offered surprising driving comfort for a 75-year-old vehicle. From the moment they were launched, the Plymouths enjoyed rapid success, prompting Walter Chrysler to build a factory devoted exclusively to them. This success gave the brand its autonomy within the Chrysler group. The car on display was bought at an auction in Denmark by Prince Rainier of Monaco himself, to add to his collection, seeing it as a gift for his Princess Grace Kelly, who was probably seduced by its beautiful bodywork reminiscent of American films of the period.
In fact, this cabriolet can carry four people in comfortable conditions. The car is powered by a 3. 2-litre four-cylinder engine developing 65 bhp, enough power to tackle mountainous journeys without fear. It comes with a canvas soft top, which is easy to fit.
The car was maintained and exhibited at the Musée du Prince until 2012.
Since then, the vehicle has undergone an engine overhaul, with extensive documentation, invoices and photo files to back it up. A real museum piece full of history.
