Description
is pleased to present for sale this Plymouth 30 U from 1931, which belonged to the private collection of Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who acquired it at auction in Denmark in the 1980s. In 2012, the car was bought back by a collector renowned for his seriousness and eye for detail. He conducted over ten years of research and archiving, tracing the model’s history and gathering complete documentation. He subsequently commissioned a full, uncompromising restoration. More than 1, 400 hours of work and an investment of nearly €50, 000 were necessary to restore this Plymouth to its former brilliance.
The restoration is documented in detail, with four volumes produced that step through the construction process. The car is also accompanied by its original technical manuals, period brochures, and a substantial bundle of invoices and parts, forming an historic dossier.
Mechanical condition
Under the bonnet, the Plymouth retains its original engine, an inline 4-cylinder 3. 2-litre delivering 65 horsepower, perfectly restored and serviced. It is worth noting that the choice made during restoration was to switch to a 12-volt electrical system. The original 3-speed manual gearbox is also in perfectly functional condition.
Interior condition
The cabin has been carefully restored and presents in very good order. The leather upholstery retains suppleness and comfort, while displaying an elegant patina. The dashboard and its original controls are functional and faithful to the period. The fabric roof has been recently redone.
Exterior condition
The bodywork, fully restored, presents a vibrant blue finish that highlights the fluid, typically American lines of the 1930s. The navy-blue canvas top is new and perfectly fitted. The chrome, headlights and bumpers gleam with impeccable shine. The wire wheels, shod with new tyres, complete this well-presented package and emphasise the timeless elegance of the cabriolet.
