L’Atelier des 1000 has the pleasure of offering for sale this stunning Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, in a combination that’s both understated and distinguished, dressed in an elegant two-tone grey and silver finish, matched with a sumptuous Scarlet red leather interior.
A true symbol of “so British” refinement, it was also the first Rolls-Royce designed to be driven by its owner—an historic turning point proudly highlighted in the marque’s advertisements, which presented it as the car you could drive yourself.
The Silver Shadow, the first Rolls-Royce to adopt a monocoque structure, marked a revolution for the Crewe firm: more compact, more modern and easier to handle than its predecessors, yet it still retains all the mechanical nobility and the legendary craftsmanship quality for which the brand is renowned.
Model year 1974, this Silver Shadow benefits from the final updates of the first generation: more precise power steering, hydropneumatic suspension and optimised braking, along with a very smooth TH400 automatic gearbox. A more refined, better soundproofed cabin underlines the attention to detail that’s so Rolls-Royce.
The example we’re presenting stands out for its harmonious presentation, beautiful original patina, and particularly desirable LHD specification.
This car was supplied new on 28/ 02/ 1974, then imported into France in 2023 by its current owner.
The owner has had it fully overhauled at Brabo less than 1, 000 km ago, with over €20, 000 worth of work.
Mechanically, the car is perfect: the engine is in excellent health, starts easily, with no noise or smoke, and delivers its power with exemplary flexibility. The fuel pump, spark plugs, battery and all belts have been replaced, and the engine has been drained.
The automatic gearbox is smooth and fluid, while the power steering provides surprisingly good manoeuvrability for a car of this size. The gearbox and final drive have been drained, and the propshaft and transmission hub bearings have been replaced.
The running gear shows no abnormal play, and the whole car offers stable, healthy and perfectly balanced behaviour. Ball-joint seals and gaiters have been replaced, as have the steering hoses.
Braking is particularly strong and reassuring: the callipers, discs, pads and handbrake shoes have been replaced, and the brake pump has been rebuilt, along with the accumulator spheres, SSI accumulator valves and the distribution valves.
The chrome wheels look superb and are shod with recent tyres.
The paintwork maintains a lovely, even gloss, while the chromes—perfectly gleaming—enhance the luxurious presentation of this Shadow.
The underbody appears sound and free from corrosion.
Finally, the cabin is appealing thanks to its warm, refined atmosphere. The supple, beautifully patinated red leather upholstery matches perfectly with the original lacquered woodwork, bringing an authentic, characterful charm.
The carpets and interior trims are well preserved, while the Nardi wooden steering wheel in varnished wood (replacing the original) echoes the edge woodwork with elegant effect. The whole car exudes an irresistible aura, typical of Rolls-Royce in the great tradition.
All the dashboard instruments are fully functional.
