Introduced in 1959, the Mark II was defined at the time as the world's fastest production sedan. It was an evolution of the Mk I, Jaguar's first monocoque sedan. The Mk II succeeded in developing an already successful line, both chic and sporty.
The car is homogeneous, much sportier than its elegant, cosseted lines would suggest. The Jaguar Mk II was offered in three displacements: 2. 4, 3. 4 and 3. 8, with manual transmissions, with or without overdrive, or automatic transmissions, mainly for the USA.
This model was marked by the development of some outstanding technical innovations. It was the brand's first self-supporting car, with independent rear-wheel suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The wider rear track than that of the Mk I improved the car's handling. The Mk II also arrived just as the motorway network came into service, allowing comfortable cruising at speeds of over 160 km/ h.
The luxury and comfort of the interior offered a sense of luxury and voluptuousness. When sales of the Mk II ran out of steam in 1967, Jaguar prolonged the model's existence with new 240 and 340 badges, which served as interim models until the introduction of the XJ6.
The car illustrating these pages is a 2. 4 from the last year of production, sold new in France via importer Delecroix. It features a mechanical gearbox with overdrive. It has a very nice patina, with original upholstery, and is still accompanied by its period service booklet, indicating, for example, that the car was sold new to a garage in Orleans, agent for Morris, MG, Volvo and Jaguar, the garage Gellet. The carnet is stamped up to 4, 000 km; the odometer now shows 6, 152 km... The car, which hasn't been driven since 2018, will need to be restarted and serviced.
