History The BMW Z3 is a two-door coupe and roadster with rear-wheel drive produced from 1996 to 2002, as the successor to the Z1, exclusively European. Although it made its official debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 1996, many people caught a preview in advance in the James Bond film GoldenEye (1995), where 007 briefly drove a blue Z3 in Cuba. The Z3 was based on the 3 Series with its front MacPherson-strut suspension based on the E36 and its rear semi-trailing arm suspension derived from the E30. Initially, the BMW Z3 was only available with four-cylinder engines. These developed 115 hp for a 1. 8 litre and 140 hp for a 1. 9 litre. From 1996, BMW offered a 2. 8-litre inline-six producing 190 hp as the new top engine. At the Frankfurt Motor Show of 1997, a whole series of new Z3 versions was presented. First, a group of five BMW engineers, led by Burkhard Göschel, had developed, in their spare time, a liftback Coupé version. This model, 2. 7 times more rigid than the roadster, was marketed as the Z3 Coupé (E36/ 8) and offered exclusively with six-cylinder engines. Moreover, the Z3 passed through the M division and was presented as the Z3 M Roadster and Z3 M Coupé, wider and more powerful versions. In Europe, the vehicle was equipped with a 3. 2-litre inline-six engine developing 321 hp. In North America, it benefited from a 3. 0-litre engine of 240 hp. In autumn 1998, a full model update was carried out. On the roadster, this resulted in more pronounced rear wings, new L-shaped taillights and a redesigned tailgate. The coupé received a chrome strip around the boot latch. Simultaneously, the 1. 8 engine was dropped in favour of the 1. 9i of 118 hp. The old 1. 9 engine remained on the catalogue for a further six months before being replaced in April 1999 by the new Z3 2. 0 of 150 hp. The latter was offered until 2000, when it was replaced by the Z3 2. 2i of 170 hp. With the facelift, the power of the Z3 2. 8, thanks to Double Vanos (two camshafts with variable timing), was raised to 192 hp. It was also replaced in 2000 by the Z3 3. 0i of 231 hp. The M Roadster and M Coupé received a new 3. 2-litre six-cylinder engine (S54 instead of the S50) delivering 325 hp (slightly less in North America) for 2001, after a production pause in H2 2000. In total, 297, 088 Z3 units were produced between 1995 and 2002. The total number of units mentioned above breaks down into 279, 273 roadsters and 17, 815 coupes. The facelifted versions of the M Roadster (344 units Europe/ worldwide, 1, 565 for North America) and the M Coupé (434 Europe/ worldwide, 678 NA) remained particularly rare.
