Nostalgic yet fairly modern and contemporary
The Alfa Romeo Spider was built for 27 years and was sold across four different generations. Pininfarina was the master of design who crafted this masterpiece. They had already designed many other cars for various brands, especially Italian ones.
The Spider was unveiled in 1966, replacing the renown of Alfa Romeo’s Giulietta Spider. Although it was an independent model. Initially, no one could have imagined a 27-year production run, but it was designed by the man Pininfarina himself, Battista Pininfarina, so the concept was immortal. This car was a commercial success, everyone loved it. Unfortunately, the famous designer died in 1966, making this Spider his last creation.
Under the bonnet lies a four-cylinder engine of original development producing 109 horsepower. Over the years, power was increased up to a maximum of 135 horsepower. Engine displacement rose from 1. 6 litres to 2 litres.
Over the years, the unique design with the long bonnet and stretched rear underwent several small changes, nevertheless the base Pininfarina design remained the same: modest dimensions and the engine equally modest yet fairly powerful, creating a pleasant and sporty driving experience, as is often the case with Alfa Romeo cars.
Alfa Romeo Spider 3
In 1983, the Spider was ‘rethought’ (minimally) for the second time to keep it performing and attractive in the modern era. The base design remained the same, rubber bumpers were added to the boot and under the bonnet, a spoiler was mounted replacing the rear wing. An optional Bosch fuel-injection system ensuring a more fluent operation was designed. In 1986, the Spider 3 received a sporting metamorphosis with sport options: sportier wheels, a fixed roof, a more elegant body on the doors and a leather interior. In 1990, a fourth generation was launched. In 1993 the Spider series was discontinued.
The charming design was based on Alfa Romeo’s previous models, the new Spider was designed to be contemporary to meet the 80s market demands. The Spider 3 is a fairly accessible classic car, making it a very popular ancestor.
