Beschreibung

At the Paris Motor Show, in October, the "Citron" DS will be 57 years old: just the right amount for a mythical car. It met the criteria requested as early as the 1930s: comfort, speed and safety. It had the immense task of replacing the legendary Traction Avant, car of gangsters and police… entered into legend during its lifetime. The DS is meant to be a car very far ahead of its time: after a certain surprise, journalists and the public went mad. But it goes through its teething troubles, which have the knack of exasperating its first owners: notably problems with the hydropneumatic suspension. However, being well born, these faults were quickly corrected, and its timeless styling would endure for twenty years. Initially delivered only in DS version, Citroën decided to release a less luxurious version, and which roughly returns to the level of its rivals, the ID, or, a little later, the D. Another point that characterises the ID and the DS: ambulances, estates, commercial and family models are only offered in ID trim. Over time, engines would change, or rather be added: the 19, 21 and finally the 23 with several different outputs. In 1967, it undergoes its first but spectacular facelift: the front end is totally redesigned and it adopts twin headlights which, later, will prove revolutionary again: the inner headlights pivot in time with the steering to illuminate the edges of the kerb or the countryside. From 1969, the range is complete: moreover, finishes vary from the DS "normal" to the Super DS and finally to the Pallas, a prestige version that would be surpassed only by the Vanden Plas, serving as a carriage for various members of the French government and senior officials. It must be said that since Delage, Delahaye and other Facel Vega, France had no prestige cars, and still does not, when compared with Germany, Great Britain and Italy. The DS would be replaced in 1975 by the CX which, despite certain innovations, technically, would never garner the same public following. The ID, with a finish less luxurious than the DS, is recognisable by the absence of wheel trims, body-colour hubcaps and non-chromed (small wheel trims and headlamp surrounds chromed from the 1959 models), the black rubber around the windscreen (grey seal cover on DS), their rear indicator horns in burgundy plastic then black (chromed on DS) and the silver chevrons on the tailgate (gold on DS). The ID roof is translucent fibreglass not painted (egg-shell colour); it is painted white from the 1962 models. Over the years, the ID underwent several evolutions. The one we are concerned with is the 1967 evolution, with an 1985 cc engine of 78 horsepower DIN. ID production ends in 1973 with the arrival of the CX.
