Description

Rarity of this example

• Short-wheelbase chassis
• Targa Soft Window
• Golden Green paint (fewer than 10 examples worldwide)
• Very good overall condition

This 1968 Porsche 912 Targa, presented in a rare configuration, is imported from the United States. It has been meticulously cared for by its previous owner for five years before arriving in France recently. It stands out with its Golden Green shade, a very rare colour carried by fewer than 10 units worldwide. The bodywork is in excellent condition with a paint finish polished and gleaming to perfection. No defects to report on the bodywork.

The interior, original, retains its dashboard with a slight imperfection to the right of the clock, in keeping with the age of the model. The instrument cluster functions perfectly, and the vehicle benefits from mechanicals in superb condition.

Under the hood, this 912 Targa has a 90-horsepower engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. An identical, year-appropriate engine was installed in the past following an engine failure. The vehicle has been meticulously serviced by Classic Renov, a renowned specialist for Porsche 356 and 911. A mechanical check-up was recently carried out to ensure everything is in perfect working order. The odometer reads 300 km, due to the five-digit counter.

Historical overview of the model

The Porsche 912 Targa, produced from 1966 to 1969, is a variant of the 912, a sports car conceived as an entry-level version of the famous 911. Launched in 1965, the 912 combined the 911's body and chassis with a 1. 6-litre air-cooled flat-four engine, inherited from the 356. With 102 horsepower and fuel economy up to 7. 8 L/ 100 km, it offered a balance of performance, handling and efficiency.

The Targa is distinguished by its removable roof and its innovative transparent rear plastic opening by a zipper, known as the "soft-window Targa". A version with a rigid rear glass ("hard-window Targa") followed in 1968. This model is also notable for being used by German and Dutch police forces, with the 100, 000th Porsche delivered being a 912 Targa for the police of Baden-Württemberg.

Despite its success, the 912 was dropped after 1969, replaced by the four-cylinder 914. Ongoing developments of the 911 and new emissions regulations also contributed to this decision, marking the end of the 912's run as an affordable pillar of the Porsche lineup.
