Autumn 1996 is when Mercedes unveiled its first version of the SLK roadster. Its market success was immediate, with lead times exceeding 12 months in the first year of sales. It was the only model at the time on the market to offer a hydraulically actuated, electrically retractable hard top. Named “Vario-roof” by the manufacturer, it consists of a rigid roof divided into two parts, a hydraulic cylinder, and several electric motors. The electrically operated roof retracts into the boot in under 25 seconds.
Mercedes launched the second generation SLK in 2004, with a design reminiscent of the iconic SLR, followed in 2011 by the third and final version, evoking the styling of the famous SLS…
