Classic Car Design presents this rare Fiat 500 Giardiniera estate car. A variant of the famous "yoghurt pot", it offers a flat loading area behind the rear bench seat thanks to its horizontally-mounted engine, a solution devised by the father of the Fiat 500, Dante Giacosa. Produced until 1977 and from 1968 onwards by Autobianchi, this example bears that marque's badge.
Externally, the bodywork is in excellent condition with no scratches or dents. It has been restored and resprayed in the past. The chrome trim and hub caps are also well preserved or have been replaced. A distinctive feature of the Giardiniera, it retains the "suicide" door opening whilst the saloon abandoned these in 1965.
Inside, the cabin is in original configuration. You'll find the single-dial instrument cluster characteristic of this generation of 500. The upholstery has been renewed, and the overall presentation matches the exterior.
Mechanically, the car runs well. The 499 cc air-cooled twin-cylinder engine starts perfectly and propels the car capably through its 4-speed gearbox. The brakes and suspension are equally sound.
The Fiat 500 Giardiniera is for anyone seeking a more original 500 than the saloon, with the added practicality of a proper rear boot. It's the ideal city car for a Sunday trip to the market!
