Description

Benjamin Type C Economic 1922

Company / History

Benjamin was a French cyclecar manufacturer, active between 1921 and 1927, based in the north-western suburbs of Paris. The company was founded by Maurice Jeanson in Asnières, eight kilometres from the centre of Paris.

The company started with a series of cyclecars, identified as the Benjamin Type A, Benjamin Type B and Benjamin Type C.

The Type C was a sportier version of the Type A, with the four-cylinder engine displacement increased to 750 cc.

What are cyclecars?

Following the First World War, Europe faced a significant shortage of resources. To promote mobility, several European countries introduced favourable tax treatment for vehicles weighing a maximum of 350 kg and equipped with an engine with a maximum displacement of 1, 100 cc.

Factories, workshops, garages and small sheds appeared everywhere, giving rise to an incredible diversity of vehicles. In Paris and its surrounding areas alone, more than 100 manufacturers, large and small, were active.

History

The history of this car is particularly charming. It was built in 1922 and we believe it spent its entire life in Paris.

Between 1922 and 1968, it is difficult to say whether the car was regularly used. What we do know is that in 1968, it entered a private museum, where it remained for 50 years. It was likely restored in the 1980s.

Subsequently, the car passed into the hands of a German owner, who displayed it as a work of art in his living room.

The car today

This magnificent Benjamin is now part of our collection and is offered for sale. The car is in good condition and presents particularly well with its wooden boot fitted at the rear.

The Benjamin is in running order and can be driven. It is equipped with a new magneto, a new radiator and a checked engine. It also benefits from a recent oil change and new spark plugs.

This superb 1922 Benjamin Type C is now for sale.
