Description
It was in March 1985 that Renault launched its little sports car, the Super 5 GT TURBO, in response to the Golf GTI and, even more so, the 205 GTI. Unlike its main rivals, it opted for a turbocharged engine, a technological signature of the marque since the late 1970s and of its experience gained in Formula 1. With its 830 kg kerb weight and its boisterous 115 hp engine, the GT TURBO quickly became a commercial success for experienced drivers... or not! Many examples saw their careers end tragically and prematurely around a tree or an Armco barrier... In July 1987 (1988 model year) it received a facelift: instantly recognisable thanks to its new 5-spoke turbine alloy wheels, it now produces 120 hp, mainly thanks to a new fully electronic ignition system.
It is this Phase 2 version that we are offering, in matching black gloss paint (code 694) with an anthracite interior and red carpets. Delivered new in July 1989 and fitted with the rare tilt-and-slide sunroof option, this GT TURBO underwent a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration in 2021. The owner at the time was a professional mechanic, who carried out most of the work himself, so we have very few invoices documenting this full refurbishment. We have the car's original handbook but not the service book, which would allow us to certify the mileage.
Today the car runs beautifully. It has just been fitted with four new tyres, giving it excellent road holding and a real driving pleasure that takes us back forty years, to another world... Cosmetically, the paintwork is recent and of good quality, and the "GT TURBO" stickers have been replaced as they were originally. Inside, and this is the rarest and hardest thing to find, the dashboard components, seats, carpets and interior trim are in very good condition, close to faultless.
So this is a magnificent R5 GT TURBO that we are offering, restored in strict accordance with its original specification. It is ready to hit the road and take you back with nostalgia to the 1980s for those of a certain age, or to show the new generations what a turbocharged sports car of 800 kilos was all about!
