The most

The best-known of the 'Big Healeys', the 3000s were truly fast in their day, and met with boundless success. From 1959 to 1967, these cars racked up victories on the world rally circuit, and quickly became the roadster of choice for American buyers - with over 91% of 3000s exported across the Atlantic.

This example was originally built for export to the US and arrived in France around five years ago. Since then, it has undergone a mechanical overhaul, while retaining much of its originality.

History and documents

  • First built for US export in March 1960

  • Has undergone an extensive mechanical overhaul
  • Currently shows 87,881 miles (141,000 km) on a five-digit odometer
  • Unfortunately we are unable to verify if this mileage is genuine
Documentation file includes:

  • British Motor Industry Heritage Trust factory record
  • Roadworthiness Certificate, valid until 2027
  • Certificate of Registration

Condition

  • Impressive Colorado Red paintwork
  • Highly original and free from perforating corrosion
  • Original black soft top
  • Original black leather interior with red carpets
The aesthetics of the Healey 3000 are inimitable. With its 'friendly face', bonnet with chrome scoop and distinctive two-tone paintwork, it is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive of British sports cars.

This example, still in its original Colorado Red paintwork, still looks very attractive. Although the paintwork has a few blemishes, the fit of the panels is still very good, and we notice no signs of pitting corrosion.

The chrome is all present and correct, with only a slight age-related patina. The windows and lenses are clean and well maintained, with no cracks or chips, and the car sits comfortably on its original spoked wheels. These are fitted with a full set of Hankook tyres, which appear to be in good condition.

The car's soft top is in good condition, with no significant tears that we were able to notice. Underneath, the car is in fairly good condition - with some surface corrosion and paint loss, but nothing structural or puncturing visible.

All in all, this is clearly a superb Concours candidate, and a superb and elegant example of a mid-century British classic.

The interior of the Healey 3000 is totally in keeping with what you'd expect from a British roadster of the 1960s. Not extremely luxurious, but still impeccably styled.

This example has undergone a few modifications over the years, but is still imbued with the British ambience, with a leather dashboard, black leather seats and a simple, uncluttered instrument layout.

The dashboard has lost some of its covering, exposing the metal underneath. The instruments have a slight patina but are still bright and easy to read, with no known faults other than the heater being deliberately disconnected. The vendor observes that the car's engine warms the cabin nicely without the need for the heater unit.

The steering wheel has lost some of its coating, with some cracks and wear, and there are some signs of wear, marks and scratches elsewhere in the interior finish. Despite this, it remains ready to use, and the natural character of the car is still very much in evidence.

The seats are in good condition, with plenty of creasing and patina, but no tears. The carpets are in similar condition, still retaining plenty of colour and with no blemishes that we noticed.

A look inside the soft top reveals no major defects, with the folding metal structure in good condition and only the usual level of staining and discolouration associated with the car's advanced age.

The boot is in good, solid condition, with a spare wheel and no significant areas of corrosion or perforation.

Mechanicals

  • Impressive 2.9-litre C-series in-line six-cylinder engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Mechanical overhaul by current owner
Lively and powerful, the BT7's in-line six-cylinder is a favourite with enthusiasts. This example appears to be in good shape, kept in a clean and well-maintained engine bay. We have received no reports of leaks, suspicious noises or smoke, and the car has been mechanically serviced.

This includes:

  • An engine rebuild
  • Overhauled carburettors
  • Overhauled fuel pump
  • Replacement of water pumps
  • Restoration of the radiator, with a more efficient cooling harness
  • Work has been carried out on the brakes to ensure good performance
The car starts seemingly straight away, whether hot or cold. This BT7 is ready and waiting for a new owner to take to the road behind the wheel.
