THE APPEAL
Back in the day, the highly desirable 240Z offered fantastic sports car styling, unrivalled performance and handling at an affordable price. In competition form, it was dominant in the Sports Car Club of America track racing, and took victory at the 1973 East Africa Safari.
Retaining earlier Z proportions, this 280Z Turbo has been restored and repainted in stunning radiant Copper paintwork and sporting enhancements include front and rear spoilers and wheel arch extensions housing the wider 17” boots.
We do not have any history regarding the engine, but the power department has clearly had some attention - being enhanced with a number of modern performance upgrades.
This stunning Japanese restomod certainly stands out from the crowd and should be great fun to drive.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Manufactured in February 1976 for the US market
- Vin plates in-situ
- Recently imported from Oman
- Export Certificate dated the 25th April 2022
- NOVA documentation
- Ready to be registered in the U.K.
- No MOT or tax
Due to this Datsun’s import from Oman in 2022, the history trail has sadly been lost but the car comes with it’s NOVA paperwork and has not been registered in the U.K. allowing the new owner to be the first registered keeper.
THE INTERIOR
- Complete and original looking interior
- AEM fuel ratio and boost gauges
- Presentable upholstery and trim
The simple and uncluttered design of the Z’s interior is driver-focussed, and in this case looks very original and complete.
Happily, the dash top has largely managed to evade sun damage although the speedometer and rev-counter lenses are foggy, but may polish up. Temperature, oil, voltage and fuel gauges sit to the right and are in good condition.
The switchgear, gear knob and handbrake are fine if a little worn in places and we can see a few scuffs and cracks to the centre console. The vinyl door cards and handles are presentable.
A couple of exceptions to originality is the fitment of an Italian leather Raid Dino steering wheel and modern AEM Fuel ratio and boost gauges which sit neatly in the middle.
Original style sports seats are in place and the black leather-grain finish is in good condition with no rips or tears and would undoubtedly ‘clean up’ even better. Black carpeting is fitted throughout and the black roof lining is decent.
Opening the hatchback we find the spacious and tidy luggage space with a solid looking boot floor with no obvious signs of corrosion or damage. There is no spare wheel or tools.
THE EXTERIOR
- Distinctive Custom Copper Metallic paint
- Front and rear spoilers and wheel arch extensions
- Gold/polished multi-spoke rims
Wow! - the stunning ‘in-period’ colour of this Datsun shimmers in the sunshine. Whilst not quite factory perfect, the repainted bodywork is still in great condition and certainly stands out from the crowd. Peering down the sides, the body appears nice and straight with even shut lines.
The bonnet, hatchback and door bottom seams appear sound with no visible corrosion, and examining the underneath, we can see an impressively clean floor and solid looking structure.
Aside from a few scratches on the door windows, a crack to one of the headlights, and the odd minor blemish, all the trim and badges are intact and in good nick. As you will have noticed, the rear bumper has been omitted.
Exterior modifications include tasteful contemporary mirrors and well fitting wheel arch extensions to accommodate the 17” aftermarket alloy wheels which are shod with older 225/45 R17 front tyres and 245/45 R17 rears.
THE MECHANICS
- 2,753 cc straight-six Turbo (L28) engine
- 5-speed transmission
- Modern performance upgrades
Under the bonnet we discover a clean and well cared for compartment with the durable fuel injected 2.8-litre straight-six Nissan Turbo option mated to a 5-speed gearbox and strong drivetrain.
The vendor informs that this 280Z has been comprehensively upgraded in recent years with the introduction of uprated fuel injectors, coils and a Link (Atom II) ECU. We are also told that a HKS induction kit and fuel rail have been installed along with a Sard fuel regulator and upgraded fuel pump.
Dual electric fans are attached to a Greedy radiator and the car is fitted with an intercooler and oil catch tank. The suspension has also been uprated (not coil-overs), and a competition exhaust lurks underneath. The brakes appear to be standard discs and drums.
A maintenance sticker on the door frame, shows that the last service was carried out in Oman in January 2021 just 933 km’s ago, at 20,500 km.
During the photoshoot, this Z fired up easily and sounded awesome. With minimal maintenance history, the mechanicals will probably require a thorough going over before any long journeys or spirited driving. The clutch and gears felt fine, the foot brake was spongy, although the handbrake operated effectively.
SUMMARY
The combination of earlier Z styling and later performance mods’ make this Datsun 280Z Turbo a classic street-machine for the 21st century.
Sure, a few cosmetic improvements could be addressed and a degree of servicing will be required in the first instance, but this classic Japanese beauty will definitely turn heads and would make an exciting daily driver, club show car or potential competition car.
