The Appeal


The third generation Skyline, the R32 model, was built from 1989-94. Originally planned “to be better than the Porsche 959”, then the best 4 wheel drive supercar of the time.  It was the first of the model to achieve legendary status, mainly due to its success in Group A racing in Japan, Australia and the UK.  

It was so dominant that having comprehensively beaten the BMW M3s and Sierra Costworths the rules were change to effectively ban the R32 from competition. It had advanced suspension, cleverly torque vectored 4 wheel drive and steering, plus a twin-turbo assisted 2.6 litre six cylinder engine, underrated by Nissan at 280hp (in fact production models had nearer 325hp straight from the box).  

Lapping the Nurburgring below 8mins 30secs it was far and away the quickest road car available at the time.  This was mainly due to handling and road holding as there were plenty of supercars that had more power.

Now enjoying legendary status amongst petrol heads around the world the R32 GT-R is has rightly become a cult classic.  This example has been thoughtfully upgraded over the years, without becoming an undriveable track monster.  The interior remains mostly standard, and the exterior has been recently renovated and painted.

The Interior

The interior of the R32 remains mostly standard with a few exceptions.  The original seats have been replaced with later R33 seats that are more supportive.  

It should be noted that the driver’s seat has some wear and damage to the foam of the side bolster, although the fabric is intact. The steering wheel has been changed for a removable Greddy wheel.  There are extra A pillar mounted gauges, an HKS Powerflow filter controller and in the centre console there are controls for the Cusco LSD system.

The carpets are pretty clean, and the original, but tatty GT-R floor mats will come with the car. The seller informs us that there is a trim piece from the passenger footwell still at the paint shop that will be reunited with the car shortly. Overall we would describe the interior as acceptable with scope for improvement if the new owner wished.

The Exterior

When the seller purchased the R32 it was looking a little tired and fitted with an unsightly body kit, but it was structurally sound with only a small amount of corrosion around the boot opening. In 2020 he delivered the car to a bodyshop for a complete repaint in its original Crystal White.  

Upon removal of the body kit it was decided to replace the sills, and repair a small area of corrosion around the boot opening.  Once painted new rubber window and door seals were installed, along with a replacement windscreen.  

A new carbon fibre front splitter was added, along with OEM electrically folding mirrors (these had been replaced with ugly aftermarket items).  New wheels were imported from Japan at a cost of £2,850 plus tyres. They are 18 inch Emotion Works deep dish five spoke alloys, complete with polished steel rims, gold torque head bolts and centre caps.  

The thin white spokes allow a good view of the large grooved discs with AP Racing 6 pot callipers.

On the whole the exterior is in excellent condition with no car park dents and virtually no stone chips. The badges are all correct, and the trademark lights are all intact and working properly.  There is little that remains to be done to the exterior; we think it looks great.

The Mechanics

Looking at the invoices it appears the major part of the build was carried out in 2018 with invoices for more than £5,000 for parts alone.  This list of upgrades is extensive and a full list is in the history folder. 

Major parts include forged Wossner pistons, single Greddy T78 turbo, Trust sump extension, Trust 90mm exhaust system, HKS Powerflow filter, Cusco front and rear LSDs, adjustable suspension, Link G4 ECU, HKS Turbo timer and Greddy gauges.  In addition the gearbox was upgraded with a fully forged gearset to handle the extra power, at a cost of further £7,000. Dyno test sheets on file show peak power of 695 hp at the wheels at 6,800 rpm.

The seller tells us that the R32 is relatively relaxing to drive with mountains of torque in all gears.  Tricky to manoeuvre at car park speeds because of the LSDs, it comes into its own on the move, with little on the road that can out accelerate it or keep up at speed (although he is quick to point out that obviously he’s never been over 70 mph!).

Summary


Nice quality GT-Rs don’t change hands that often.  Most owners know that values are increasing, especially for examples that are in tidy condition. 

Revered amongst those in the know, it’s no surprise that the Skyline GT-R has attained mythical status as few cars have achieved success in so many areas of motorsport.  Add to that its cult status amongst street racers and the drift crowd; it’s pretty well assured a place in the all-time great car list.
