Highlights
- Desirable ‘British Open Classic’ special edition
- Previously restored externally, recent engine work
- Running, driving and ready to enjoy
The Appeal
Derived from the 1275cc Mini Mayfair, the ‘British Open Classic’ Rover Mini was a limited-run model, of which only 1,000 cars were produced for the British market.
Finished in British Racing Green, the BOC also featured a full-length, electrically-operated Webasto sunroof, Minilite-style wheels, opening rear windows, and Beige countryman tweed seating, with leather inserts and matching trims.
A desirable special-edition of an already much-loved and iconic classic car, this particular example was purchased by the vendor in 2019, and restored by this son-and-father duo at home, being re-sprayed and mechanically overhauled.
Ready to use and enjoy but retaining potential for further winter restoration work, this BOC would make a wonderful light ‘finishing’ project in time for warmer weather, or an excellent classic/retro runabout as it sits, thanks to the extensive mechanical restoration carried out in its current ownership.
History/Paperwork
- Purchased by the current owner in January 2019 from a long-term friend, with the car having been left in a poor state
- Full bodywork and mechanical restoration carried out in the current ownership, including a re-spray in the correct British Racing Green
- The engine has been partially rebuilt during the current ownership, including a head skim, new head gasket, valve clearances checked and adjusted, new carburettor fitted, a new mechanical fuel pump and a new starter motor
- Alongside the engine rebuild, a new clutch has been fitted
- Underneath, part of the floor pan was cut-out and replaced, as well as the rear of the sills. The underside has then been protected and cleaned-up, and any other known issues addressed
- Following the restoration works, the car completed the London-Brighton Mini Run without issues
- There is no formal history prior to the current ownership, though there are some documents from the current owner’s care, along with a photographic record of the restoration works carried out
- A number of miscellaneous spare parts are included in the sale of the vehicle
The Interior
- Impressively original throughout
- Seats in very good condition, some light wear commensurate with the vehicle’s age and mileage
- Door cards in good shape
- The high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel, inner door jambs and shifter display a mild usage patina
- Some marks and damage visible to the headlining and sunroof inner lining, particularly around the C-pillar areas
- The dashboard trim would benefit from some attention
- The vendor notes that the radio unit is inoperable
- Additional sound-deadening fitted underneath the carpets to improve drivability
- Boot in good condition, with no reported corrosion issues, and a small bespoke plaque has been fitted to commemorate the restoration
The Exterior
- Re-sprayed in OE British Racing Green, and presenting very well overall
- There is a small dent below the N/S door handle, and there are other small marks such as around the door handles, edges of the doors and on the seam between the wheel arch and scuttle panel
- The side glass still bears the original registration markings
- The front grille is original, and wears a commensurate patina
- At the rear, there are some marks visible to the roof area
- Other than the aforementioned dent, there is no known bodywork damage
- All of the requisite chrome trims are present, and new model-specific graphics were applied following the re-spray
- All four Minilite-style wheels are near-immaculate, whilst the tyres are all date-coded from the 37th week of 2019 and are reported to be in good condition
The Mechanicals
- Partial engine rebuild/overhaul in current ownership
- New carburettor
- Underside given a full clean, protect and overhaul, and remains in excellent condition as seen in the photos below
- The engine itself, along with the bay, presents in excellent condition
- The vendor reports that the car drives fantastically, though they do admit the exhaust is on the louder side
- The current MoT exam - dated 16 May 2022 and valid until 19 May 2023 - shows a clean first-time pass with no advisory items
Summary
Cherished and adored whilst in the care of the current owner and restored as part of a father/son duo, this 1993 Rover Mini British Open Classic Edition has proven itself to be reliable, dependable and bags of fun to drive, and has benefitted from a significant overhaul at the hands of the current keeper, but retains some potential for further aesthetic upgrades/restoration should the next owner wish to do so.
Presented in good condition overall, this ’93 BOC would make an excellent classic daily driver or weekend toy, or a fantastic addition to any classic Mini enthusiast’s collection.
