Designed by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina, the Alfa Romeo 916 Spider was fabulous to drive, with quick steering and a very nimble and balanced chassis. Built between 1995 and 2004 the 916 GTV utilised a Twin-Spark 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine or a 3.0 V6, both being front wheel drive and available in Coupe or Convertible form.
Rust worries were largely put to rest by galvanising the entire bodyshell, thus eradicating the rust problems suffered by older Alfas. The overall result was a very stylish and nicely balanced sports car that still looks great and is most certainly destined to be a modern-day classic.
The current owner has had the car for about a year during which time he has used it sparingly covering only around 1,000 miles.
The car’s service history starts off well for the first few years and owners with stamps in the service book up until 2007 and then the next stamps in the book have been for the last few years, but it has had and 2 cambelt changes, the last one being around 10,000 miles ago, with its last major service being in 2020.
The current MOT expires in April of next year
The V5 is present showing 11 previous owners and there are numerous MOTs and receipts for repairs and servicing, that haven’t been stamped in the service book, done by present and previous keepers over the years.
The car comes with three keys and all the original GTV Owner’s handbooks and service book.
The cabin has an air of sporting intent about it with plenty of Italian flair about the design from the deeply recessed dials to the circular air vents in the dash.
The black interior is in good condition but does have signs of use and wear. The black leather embroidered seats need a bit of TLC, especially the driver’s seat bolster, and there is a very small tear in the side of the passenger seat, but some leather treatment will go a long way towards rejuvenating the leather.
Carpets and floor mats show signs of use but are in good condition and the door cards, fascia, dashboard and switchgear are all in more than respectable condition.
The hood mechanism works smoothly, stowing neatly in its compartment at the rear, and there are no signs of any water ingress anywhere in the cabin.
The boot is clean and dry and houses the spare wheel, jack and tools.
Presented in Silver with a Black roof the car looks great having had a respray around 5 years ago and the Silver contrasts well with the black interior.
There are no obvious signs of any rust spots or bubbling paint anywhere but there are a few inevitable small scrapes and scratches here and there, namely on the front spoiler, the rear bumper and the passenger door mirror. There are also some scratches on the undersides of the side sills and the inside of the passenger door has a few scratches that could easily be touched up and the windscreen has a couple of small stone chips in it.
The black hood fits well but is faded a bit in places so could do with some light renovation and there is some stitching that has come adrift on the rear plastic window.
The alloy wheels are virtually new, all lights are clear and there is only a small part of the lens missing on the driver’s side front lower light cluster.
The underneath has recently been rust proofed and a Powerflow sports exhaust is also fitted.
Under the bonnet is clean and tidy with no obvious signs of any oil or coolant leaks. The car has been serviced only last year and the cambelt was changed around 10,000 miles ago.
It starts well and drives smoothly.
The car’s character and Italian styling are very much key to its appeal, with its tight and predictable handling and rev-happy engine providing a great driving experience.
There is no doubt that the Alfa Romeo GTV, especially in its Spider convertible form, is a very beautiful car with timeless lines that will ensure its place as a very desirable and usable classic car both now and in the future.
