THE APPEAL
On release, the 6-Series 645 was seen to be the best BMWs in years, combining a lot of the key safety, performance and quality issues seen in the later cars.
The exterior was designed by Adrian van Hooydonk and BMW Design Chief Chris Bangle. It features the angular lines at the rear that was a real talking point at the time of manufacture and grew in popularity. On release, the overall design was said to look bold and unconventional while retaining the elegance of all good grand tourers. It has seemed to age very well and still looks fresh today.
This soft soft-top example we have here has even more appeal, especially when the top is down, and you can hear the glorious growl from the V8 engine.
The decision was made by BMW engineers to advance the art of the folding soft-top. Such systems give greater flexibility, more boot space and contribute to lightweight engineering.
The roof is multi-layered and made of a rubberised cloth inner and outer with a polyurethane material called PUR sandwiched between. This results in virtually the same high standards of acoustics, feel and thermal insulation as a folding hard-top, reducing wind noise by up to 3dB(A).
Not many four-seater convertibles are pure drivers' cars, but the 645Ci is one of an elite breed and wafts you around in luxury like the 7 Series. The appeal lies just as much in its dynamics as in its performance.
The car also features the German company's acclaimed Dynamic Drive active suspension set-up and safety is also a huge attraction for this car which features BMW's Advanced Safety System, enabling the car to decide the most effective deployment of the airbags in a crash, dynamic stability control, front knee protection the convertible model we have here also feature an automatic rollover protection system, where roll-bars behind the rear seats are automatically deployed in a rollover. - The 4398cc V8 petrol engine sounds wonderful, and the vendor tells us it runs without fault
- The power comes from the same engine as the Coupe. With 333bhp available, it propels the car from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds
- Top speed is limited to 155mph. But the V8 isn't all about performance. At cruising speeds the vendor tells us the car wafts along almost silently
- The Valvetronic V8 is also found in the 7 Series but sounds much meatier thanks to the less restrictive exhaust
