The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet is a refined and elegantly proportioned four-seater convertible that combines the comfort, quality and sophistication for which the marque is renowned with the appeal of open-top motoring. While convertibles have become an increasingly rare sight in recent years, with many manufacturers abandoning them altogether, cars such as this serve as a timely reminder of their enduring charm.
This generation of E-Class proved particularly successful for Mercedes-Benz and was offered in a variety of bodystyles, including saloon, estate and coupé variants. The Cabriolet, however, offered something rather different, pairing genuine four-seat practicality and impressive long-distance comfort with the open-air enjoyment of a convertible roof. Mercedes-Benz also equipped it with the innovative AIRCAP system, which uses a wind deflector integrated into the windscreen header rail alongside a secondary deflector between the raised rear head restraints to significantly reduce cabin turbulence when driving with the roof lowered.
Although diesel engines have fallen somewhat out of fashion in recent years, the E220 CDI makes a compelling case for itself. Producing 168bhp and a substantial 295lb-ft of torque, it is capable of reaching 60mph in a very respectable 8.5 seconds while returning a claimed 56.5mpg on the combined cycle.
Finished in a distinctive colour combination that offers a welcome alternative to the more common silver and black examples, this stylish Mercedes-Benz would make an excellent companion for daily use, family outings, summer evening drives and memorable road trips alike.
