We are delighted to present for sale, this very special Lightweight.... so why so special, apart from the fact that it's an original and good looking vehicle? Well, this vehicle has a very interesting, fully documented history.
It was built as one of the last lightweights in 1984, and was despatched to Ashchurch vehicle storage depot. In 1986 it went to Northern Ireland to their VSD (Vehicle storage depot). In 1989 it formed part of the Roulement Sqn in N. I. It was, from there, struck off in 1999, appearing into civilian hands in 2002, for the princly sum of £4000 plus VAT !
SInce then it's had two further keepers. To those who know, lightweights generally left service with very few miles on the clock - they were mostly stored ready for deployment by plane for a "roulement" campaign. The earliest mileage we know of was in 2005, three years into civilian life, showing 5576 miles.
The following readings are -
2008 5, 580
2009 5, 780
2010 8, 095
2012 10, 054
2013 10, 170
2014 10, 331
2016 10, 463
2017 11, 019
2018 11, 579.
The most recent MOT showed the circa 11, 500 miles as KM - Kilometres...... so we looked carefully at the clock and realised it was a KM clock set up - and the actual miles converted is 7, 206 miles. This would make it easily the lowest mileage Lightweight we have owned for an extremely long time.
So how does this affect it? Well, the low owners and low use mean that it's very original..... it still has the twin tanks with changeover tap, the split pioneer tailgate minus tools (as it was issued), the proper bumperettes, 12v trailer socket, nato hitch, FFR canvas, and military headlamps. The interior is also like this - the proper militray mounting bar for the seatbelts is there, with gun mounts. The dash is all standard and everything is just where it should be. The dash speedo clock looks like new, with shiny glass and clean interior (see photo), and it all just looks in such good condition.
Out on the road is where the low miles is really noticed. Our workshop manager took it out on test and returned saying that this one felt "just right and really nice," This is what then pointed us towards the sales pack, the cast certificate and the mileage history. We find it quite incredible that a 34 year vehicle could have done so little, and been preserved in such very original condition. For this reason we have not felt it appropriate to make any cosmetic changes to it - it should be left and preserved. (We have oiled the paintwork to clean and protect it.
In summary, if you are looking for an original, low mileage, honest Lightweight in popular format (petrol, RHD, 12v Softtop) then this is surely worth considering...... we doubt we will ever see one like this again!
