The BMW 2002 was the very first BMW Compact Sports Saloon. Helmut Werner Bönsch (BMW's director of product planning) and Alex von Falkenhausen (BMW’s technical director and ex-racing driver) each modified their BMW 1600-2s (the original ‘02) by fitting larger two litre engines. When they realised they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they put a joint proposal to BMW's board and 1968s legendary BMW 2002 was born.
This 1968 BMW 2002 is believed to be the 599th car built. Finished in dark blue with black full leather interior it’s had just 3 owner’s since 1976 (father, son & I) and has a fully document history including bill of sale since ‘76.
Subject to a £22k ‘bare shell’ photographic restoration by marque specialist Jaymic. The engine is an Alex Elliot built tii engine (basically the same as used in BMW F1 turbo car in the ‘80’s) with BMW M3 crank, BMW e24 635 group A pistons, Alpina rods and throttle body injection. Bills for engine build alone are over £7k in addition to the restoration.
Suspension and brakes are BMW 2002 Turbo items, the 5 speed gearbox and matching differential are BMW e21
The build is exceptional (e. g. suspension nuts are wirelocked race style) and the body remains rust free. Paint, especially the under side and under bonnet & boot is very good. It’s exciting to drive (circa 180bhp) but feels extremely solid and secure on the road, nothing like a 50 year old car. This BMW has been a no expense spared labour of love for over 40 years and is probably one of the best available today.
