1924 Vauxhall 23/ 60 OD - with 30/ 98 components

The 23/ 60 was introduced in July 1922 as the successor to the Vauxhall 25hp model that had proved its mettle during the Great War and had established Vauxhall's name as a byword for strength and dependability. The engine was essentially the same unit as the 25hp version but with overhead valves.

This motor car - a 1924 'Kington' Tourer, was imported from Australia in 2013 and subsequently underwent considerable restoration, which included removal of wings, running boards and valences for repair as required. A total repaint was then carried out and the non original vinyl interior trim was removed and the car then retrimmed in brown leather to the correct pattern.

Some years ago the engine was rebuilt using the crank case from a 30/ 98 'E' Type and the gearbox from an OE Series 30/ 98. The crank case, bearing engine number E318 is date stamped May 1920 - so it still has the longer stroke 'E' Type crank shaft and conrods to suit. The gearbox, stamped OE13 is from an early OE Series car and as the car has a 30/ 98 crankcase and gearbox, a future owner could consider converting the car into a 30/ 98 at some stage, as it has these desirable features.

A major mechanical service was carried out, including a refurbishment of the carburettor and renewal of the main jet.

Additional work has included a rewire using correct cloth covered cables, re-nickel plating of all brightwork and fitment of new side lamps. The petrol tank has been replaced with a new stainless steel item. A pair of new 23" straight sided wheels were fitted to the front and the other three wheels were shot blasted and powder coated. New tyres have been fitted all round.

The history of the car (chassis OD949) has been traced back as far as possible and a dating certificate confirms the year of manufacture as 1924. The Australian history goes back to the 1950s, when the car was owned by Percy Hunter, a well known racer and preparer of Vintage cars at the time. The current owner purchased the car from the widow of the gentlemen who had owned it since the '60's. At that time had the crankcase from an OE 30/ 98 and the gearbox from an E Type 30/ 98, but the cylinder block, bore size and OHV cylinder head were original OD23/ 60, giving a slightly larger capacity than the standard 4 litres, as the stroke is 10mm longer.

A fine, imposing and powerful Vintage motor car, ideal for long distance touring and events, it has a very good hood and a full tonneau cover.

There are a set of 20" wheels included, along with a hub puller.
