1958 Vauxhall Victor F-Type Super
Registered 25th June 1958, this early series Vauxhall is certainly a rare site indeed, especially in this exterior colour combination and fabulous glitter interior. Pure 55 Chevrolet in everyway but of course a lot smaller.
Can you imagine picking this car up from the dealers in the late 1950’s and then parking it amongst the grey and black Austin’s of the day? The original owner must have felt like a film star!! There is no doubt that this old lady is still a head turner and as we head towards the spring season, she will certainly give the next owner as much as the 3 previous registered ones.
So, on to the condition and I will endeavor to describe the Vauxhall as accurately as I can, whilst also making interested parties aware of some detailing and improvements which are included in the sale.
Bodywork
The Vauxhall has only very minimal corrosion and considering most of these rusted within weeks of leaving the showroom, this Victor must have led a pampered life. The body panels are rock solid, the doors shut with a factory click and the underside is superb. Panels all appear to be factory and virtually most of the paintwork is in my opinion factory. Purists may note some various age related marks and there are a few minor areas where the paintwork is showing its age. Overall though, this Vauxhall is in great condition.
Mechanicals
From the moment you open the bonnet, its clear that the Victor has been well maintained with many new parts clearly visible. The engine is dry, clean and idles very nicely with no unusual knocks or bangs. The gearbox is smooth and the brakes are excellent and the only fault noted on road test was that the carb mixture is too weak and the rear differential is noisy. Regarding the latter, we are currently having the rear axle refurbished and the car serviced and tuned as part of the sale.
Interior
The Vauxhalls interior is absolutely lovely and shouts 1950’s GM. I have never seen one of these with a cloth interior and I’m guessing that the first owner must have paid extra to upgrade from the standard vinyl which was common on the mid range super models. Maybe this car was destined for export, we may never know. Its certainly unique and we are currently having the gold flex cloth gently cleaned to bring out the original finish, whilst also carrying out some further detailing of the interior to make the old girl shine. The electrical components appear to be working correct, with exception to the valve radio, which lights up but has no sound
Trim
There is a lot of chrome on these 50’s Vauxhalls and considering its over 60 yeas old, it still looks well, with exception to some tarnish around the corner of the bumpers and some minor age related pitting here and there.
Summary
There is no doubt that this 58 Victor is a unique and original piece of British motoring history. It’s not a fully restored showpiece, neither is it a spruced up to look nice worn out old banger. This car can only be described as an original, virtually unmolested and rock solid early Vauxhall Victor which has had 3 very careful owners who have nurtured and maintained her, whilst retaining as much of the cars factory trim, paintwork and character as possible. Priced to reflect the investment now being put in to improve this great car and take it to the next level. The Victor also comes with a nice history file, workshop manuals and other literature
