Combining the power, poise and handling of a sports car with the refinement, comfort and equipment of a luxury saloon, the 928 was a car ahead of its time, embracing design, form and function. Beautifully styled by Wolfgang Möbius under the guidance of Anatole Lapine, the 928 featured advanced technology such as the "Weissach Axle", a simple rear-wheel steering system that provided passive rear-wheel steering to increase stability while braking during a turn. Whilst the body was mainly of galvanized steel, a silicone aluminum engine block and the use of aluminum doors, bonnet and boot all provided significant weight savings to enhance handling and performance. Polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-coloured plastic. An unusual feature for the time, but one which added to the styling, whilst at the same time produced a class leading drag co-efficient. With 50/ 50 front/ rear weight distribution, the car was beautifully balanced and whilst it weighed more than the difficult-to-handle 911, its more neutral weight balance and higher power output gave it similar performance on the track.
