Here is a very rare and lovely motorcycle, a 1988 Norton Rotary Classic, this is a bike that should be on everyone's wish list, so smooth, so rare and unlike anything else. This bike comes with every piece of correspondence from the factory to the first owner, the certificate of authenticity, two sets of keys, toolkit, handbook, brochure, parts book, manuals, all it's old MOT certificates etc etc.
The engine has been 'Moly'd' (very very important) by no less than the Norton guru Richard Negus, who provided a written and photographic log of the work completed, consequently it runs perfectly, starts instantly and idles at a rock-steady 800rpm (which is the sign of a good engine) These engines will reliably clock up huge mileages if the simplest of precautions are taken, the most important being.. use the right oil.
The only other modifications are an upgraded ignition box and regulator/ rectifier (most rotaries in any sort of regular use will have had these upgraded) and a set of stainless brake discs. A number of stainless fasteners are also fitted, but every original part removed from the bike has been retained and will go with it.
I very recently took the Classic to the Isle of Man and ran it around the TT course, (see photo at The Bungalow) something I had long wanted to do, it ran faultlessly and is even remarkably frugal on fuel. New Continental tyres were fitted before the trip to the Isle of Man, they have covered no more than two or three hundred miles, it is very much ready to ride.
Having owned a Suzuki RE5 and a DKW W2000, there is no comparison, the Norton is light years ahead, but there are just 100 of these genuine Classics in existence, so this could be your one chance to buy a low mileage, running and usable example at a reasonable price.
