For sale, from Honda UK’s heritage fleet, is one of the rarest Type R’s in the UK. Just one of sixteen examples produced and sold worldwide in 2. 0-liter K20a specification, the Mugen 20 is a vastly enhanced version of the FN2-generation Type-R. Due to an internal review, and planned refresh of the UK’s heritage fleet, the Mugen Type-R is now surplus to requirements and in need of an enthusiast owner to cherish and thoroughly enjoy.
History:
The Mugen 20 Civic Type-R was originally conceived to showcase what Mugen Euro could do with a car for the European market. The FN2 was built to emulate the JDM-only Type-RR FD2 sedan, which saw all 300 examples sell out in just six minutes.
MU09GEN is the car that was involved in an incident at the Goodwood FoS ‘moving motorshow’ in 2010 where it sustained front-end damage to the wings, bumper and bonnet. The car was comprehensively inspected and fully rebuilt by Honda’s in-house bodyshop. A further nine years of magazine road tests then took their toll on the front end of the car. As a result, the Mugen has just undergone a £12, 500 bare metal respray and light restoration at Honda UK Press Department’s approved body shop; AutoTechnics, in Windsor. The ultra-light-weight Mugen GP wheels were also refurbished at the same time, in a deep gunmetal finish.
The car is sold with a full-service history, supported by all previous MOTs, and has been prep’d for its departure with new oils and filters. PDFs of the car’s magazine appearances and a range of professional images will also be included in the sale.
The car has completed just 32, 891 miles in its life, and in addition to its exterior refresh has also recently received new genuine Mugen/ Showa dampers, Mugen discs and Mugen pads all round, as well as new Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R tyres, a new crackle red rocker cover, and new Type-R transfers on the rear 3/ 4 panels.
It has been dry-stored on trickle-charge at a secure facility its entire life, any servicing that has been required has been carried out immediately, regardless of costs and as a result MU09GEN is perhaps the best condition FN2 Civic in existence. However, due to a comprehensive internal review and overhaul of Honda UK’s heritage fleet, the car is now surplus to requirements and in need of an enthusiast owner to cherish and use as was intended.
Revisions:
This Mugen 20 is the most extreme example of the FN2 Civic Type R platform. Revised engine internals and breathing systems mean that the naturally-aspirated K20a engine fitted to the car now produces 237bhp. This has been achieved through the fitment of Mugen camshafts and valve springs, Mugen pistons, larger throttle body and a revised ECU. The Mugen intake manifold and exhaust combination on the car deliver a superb rendition of the iconic VTEC noise, described by Evo Magazine at the time as a rorty, raspy, popping, snarly mix of induction and exhaust.
The engine is blueprinted and built to the exact specification of Mugen race prepared K20a, which retailed (in 2009) at £16, 500+VAT alone.
Chassis revisions comprise of five-step adjustable (bound & rebound) Showa dampers and bespoke Mugen springs that lower the ride-height by 10mm. The 18” forged Mugen GP wheels are 5kg lighter than the standard Type R wheels, per corner, drastically cutting unsprung weight.
Stopping power is provided by 320mm Mugen discs, with uprated four-pot callipers up front. These changes are paired with a mechanical differential and a shortened throw on the six-speed transmission, which really transforms the driving characteristics of the car.
Externally, the car wears lightweight composite bumpers, wings, bonnet and front grille. These Mugen styled items are paired to matching side skirts and a high-level rear spoiler to complete the overall look, as well as provide genuine downforce and reduced drag.
Inside, the car has been returned to standard Type R GT specification, making the prospect of daily driving a possibility. The only additions being Mugen dials that monitor water temperature, engine oil temperature and engine oil pressure, paired with a Mugen data logger.
This car is not to be confused with the Type R Championship White edition, or the Type R Mugen 200. MU09GEN is; one of just sixteen Mugen 20 cars built in this specification, a car that has led a genuinely interesting life and one that has been meticulously repaired, maintained and cherished throughout its time with Honda UK.
