Description
HERE is my stunning and ultra-rare 1972 Opel Ascona A series, not to be confused with the Ascona B which replaced it in 1975 and ran alongside the Vauxhall Cavalier as part of the Vauxhall-Opel fleet. Opel was still very much an independent German company when this stunning A series was built in their Rudesheim factory and it was a "stand alone" model with no Vauxhall equivalent.
Finished in a beautiful blue which was very much an Opel colour of the day, this Ascona would stand out on any show ground. She underwent a fair degree of restoration just a few years ago and was totally re-painted everywhere, including the underside which remains in the same body colour. The floors and engine bay - both in superb condition - are finished in a very appealing satin black. Do not confuse this with "blacking up" in order to hide repairs etc. It is clearly a carefully chosen black finish and has been done professionally in my view.
I think you may struggle to find any more A Series Asconas for sale. So, go on. Be different! She boasts an outstanding and original interior with her seats in the typically Germanic finish, very similar to Mercedes and BMW from the same era. She is a really perky 1600cc and has the addition of a Weber carb which helps with acceleration and offers up a real throaty, sporty rasp through the exhaust. Wider wheels have been fitted with low profile tyres and she may have been (can't quite say for sure) have been lowered at the front. All in all, a great look believe me! Apart from one or two minor imperfections, she is superb in my opinion. And I just love that front end!
She has a mileage reading of just 49, 000 which I would hazard a guess is probably correct. In her history file, a large chunk of MoT certificates go back to the 1980s when she had covered just 16, 000.
All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 48-years-old. They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face!
