This is a BMW R80RT mono, that although having been stored for a few years, has absolutely loads of potential.
The bike has been stored for a few years, but as with most of these great old bikes, some fresh fuel, a carb clean, and a battery saw it burst into life. The motor is particularly strong, with no smoke, no rattles, and oil and charge lights extinguishing as they should. A compression check is showing a strong and even 135 across both cylinders. Mileage is showing a very low 35k, but as with many of these old boxers, there appears to have been a clock change about 14 years ago. I think true mileage is nearer 50 or 60k.
I would describe the cosmetics as “mixed”. Although the frame is crusty in places, the paintwork is quite respectable, with much of it original. Tyres are good, the exhaust system is stainless steel (complete with central “H” section upgrade), and there are nice chrome pannier frames. There is a nice floating disc upgrade too. Alas, no panniers. Electrics are fine, with charging, lights, indicators, and idiot lights working as BMW intended. She’s off the button, hot or cold, and ticks over like a watch.
I’m busy with projects at the moment, and in the middle of moving premises, so I’ve decided that despite the potential in this one, i’ve decided to let it go. The bike will be sold as seen, will have an oil change service, but is strictly a “project” bike. I only say that because unlike with almost every other BMW i sell, the bike has not been road tested, and does not have an MOT. Having said that, i see no reason why it should not sail through an MOT.
Here is a decent history file with the bike, containing the usual maintenance invoices and old MOTs. All in all, a great basis for a custom, or ride as is. Surely a great bike at this price!
