For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Lightweight in NATO Green (1972).

Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. 12v. RHD. Recent Canvas. 72, 700 miles (believed genuine based on MOT history back until 2005). Immobiliser. Rear Bench Seats.

We are delighted to present for sale this unusually straight and smart Land Rover® Lightweight. As the photos show, the vehicle looks to have been well looked after and doesn’t have the usual battle scars associated with some Lightweights. There are lots of period military features that one would hope to find on a ‘good’ lightweight – bridging plate, front and rear bumperettes, vintage plates, front lifting eyes, split tailgate, twin toolboxes and ATU’s on the wing tops. The paintwork is equally pleasing with what we would regard as the perfect military finish for one of these vehicles. There are military screw lenses all round, which is also nice to see and handy if you need to change a bulb!

The interior houses 3 standard front seats, with matting to the footwells. The rear is fitted with twin benches to increase seating to seven occupants including the driver. The dash is how one would hope to see with original heater and twin vent demist. The plastic areas around the steering column and wiper motor have also survived and this is great to see. There is an additional military interior light, handy for these dark nights and mornings. We’ve run and owned lightweights for many years, and have enjoyed running them stripped in the summer but also have had fun in the snow with the heater on and the canvas firmly strapped down! Despite common misconceptions, these vehicles can be comfortably run in the winter with the heater blazing all the time.

Lightweights were fitted with twin tanks to give a 500 mile range, but in most cases the passenger fuel tank fails to survive. This is true of this vehicle, but a previous owner has cleverly used the tank space to house a small reserve tank…. in other words, the changeover tap survives and gives several additional gallons of range should you be caught short away from the petrol station. It would be possible in time to refit a replacement passenger tank as all the pipework is still in situe and functioning for the smaller reserve that is currently fitted. A 12v isolator switch is fitted near to the driver, meaning that the vehicle can be immobilised both for theft prevention and slow battery drains.

Out on the road, this lightweight drives just as it should and looks the part too. The engine is sweet (perhaps due to the low mileage) and it is great fun to drive. Accompanying this vehicle is a good file of receipts which include a spare set of keys and an original Lightweight user manual, and a host of old MOTs.

In summary, if you are looking for a Lightweight, then this example is well worth consideration. With MOT & Tax exemption, a good history and lots of original period features, it should prove to be a good investment for the future whilst being fun to own and drive in the meantime – with 7 seats, the whole family can come too. We are huge fans of the Lightweight Land Rover® and hope the new owner appreciates them as much as we do!
