Current owner for 7 years, previous owner for 10 years prior to that, all adverts for sale and invoices for sale included, plus original BMW brochure.
Car has been pampered and garaged most all its life, bought from Godfrey Hall as a Demonstrator (see picture of ad for £36k, invoice included), then to the enthusiast I bought it from 7 years ago, who owned it for 10 years (see picture of advert for circa £25k, invoice included, then advert that I responded too 7 years ago, also with invoice for sale included). To give you an idea of the pampered life it has led, when I bought it in 2013, it was still running the original front tyres at 47k and using the original wipers. I had no intention of selling as I couldn’t find anything else I liked, then I spotted an Alpina B10 V8s a few weeks back and now I have 2 x E39’s and it is time for the 530i Sport to find a new home. These cars are surprisingly economical on the motorway, I used to commute 2-3 days a week 100 mile round trip and it was long term averaging 36 MPG and regularly over 500 miles for the 70l tank.
I have had a lot of the common faults with the E39’s repaired during my ownership, don’t be put off, all cars have common faults and if you own one for 7 years like I have that is 20 years old, you get familiar with what goes wrong, if the car you are looking at hasn’t had these done, then consider them when negotiating:
- Climate Control Hedgehog unit changed (£150)
- Windscreen washer pump (£200)
- Pixels in dash repaired and lifetime guarantee (£200)
- Auto box service (in last 3 month) - (£450)
- Rocker cover gasket (in last 3 months) - (£125)
- Bosch S5 battery with 5 year guarantee (12 months ago) - (£125)
It is now due a service on age, but 3 green lights still showing on dash, I will include the Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil for next service, up to the new owner when they get this done.
As a 20 year old car, it is only fair I point out the bad bits. It has had the same advisories on the MOT for the last few years, mostly suspension related parts, I have been quoted £1k to fix all of these items and change all 4 new tyres. None of this is urgent and having asked the mechanic I use, if he would be doing these bits if it was his car, he said he would wait another year and review at MOT time in Oct, so that is what I have done. There are also a couple of rust spots, one on the drivers sill and a small bit on the rear, where the boot meets the bumper, I have been quoted £360 plus VAT to fix both, so circa £1500 to spend on the car at some point, none of it urgent, hence why I have not got round to it.
With regards to the price and looking at what else is on the market and seeing many of them selling quickly, I was going to ask £7500 for it, but with £1500 in repairs and bodywork to consider over the next 2-3 years I felt £6000 was more realistic.
Appreciating classic, not many left in this condition and with this history, I will be sad to see her go, well slightly sad, I have the Alpina B10 V8s to keep me entertained.
