We are delighted to present for sale this very smart ex-military Land Rover® 90, in NATO Green. These 90s are becoming rarer to find, particularly in the condition as seen in the photos.
Externally, there are lots of period features one would hope to see when looking for a “good” military 90 – the military screw lenses, bonnet mounted spare, door mounted mirrors, recent khaki canvas, rear bumperettes and wheel arch extenders. The tyres are all good, and matching ex military XLRs showing a certain level of care and attention to detail by the former owner. Even the spare matches and is fitted in place correctly with the proper mount. All of this combined gives a really strong stance – it looks just like it should and has, in our opinion, just the right amount of military stature to look good without being over the top. Perhaps the most poignant thing to note is the really super paint finish – it’s the correct colour and has a satin finish but there’s no sign of a brush here – it’s a professional paint finish and it looks as nice up close as it does from 10 yards….. not often seen !
The interior houses a pair of standard seats to the front, with a cubby-box in the middle for storage, complete with cupholders. Deluxe matting is fitted to the footwells. The rear is unfitted except for a load mat, but could house bench seats for £295 to bring seated capacity to seven occupants including the driver. It’s nice to see the military “convoy” headlight switch still central in the dash, along with the working map light that was fitted for use in the forces.
The underside of this 90 also carries the well looked after theme further – the chassis is very clean and it is one of the best we have seen in recent years – we suspect that this vehicle has probably had some rebuid/ refurb attention since its time in the military, unless it was never used by the squaddies who ran her!
This vehicle was a local purchase, and was driven 35 miles by us into our premises without incident. On the run it drove faultlessly (apart from a minor gearbox issue that we decided to rectify in house…. it could have been used “as is” but the rest of the truck is so up together and sorted that it was a fly in the ointment that we felt deserved sorting. It will also give peace of mind to the new owner that all is well!0 This truck starts with the first turn of the key and pulls as it should to speed. For an old 90 (we have to remind ourselves that this lovely old truck is well over 30 years old) it drives really well – it is basically a modern 90 in set up (springs, chassis etc as the design hasn’t changed) but it does not have all the troublesome electrics and modern systems. This means it can be maintained, repaired and serviced by the most basic of mechanics, and without great expense. As it makes its way towards MOT and tax exemption (5 years to go) it will become more valuable, user friendly, and a great asset to any family. (We love our 90 but have rather longer to wait to gain free road tax and avoid the annual visit to the MOT station)….. so getting on board with a good 90 now is a great way to ensure hassle free motoring in the future.
In summary, if you are looking for a good ex-military soft-top 90 with impending tax and MOT exemption , then this could be for you. These ex military vehicles are more rugged than their civilian counterparts, fun to own in all weathers, whether it be soft-top off in summer or getting through snow in winter, and are simple to maintain also. There are no tricky electrical ECU’s or computers, so living with these vehicles is relatively easy. We really like this old girl and hope she finds a loving home soon!
