Beschreibung
From the factory it’s a high spec Syncro that came with Front & Rear Difflocks, Electric Windows, Electric Heater Mirrors, Central Locking, Adjustable Front Headlights, ABS, Heated Driver Seat, Webasto Water Heater and the Factory Option Steel Sliding Sunroof.
The van was imported to the UK in 2009. I’d known about it for a couple of years and I jumped at the chance to buy this back in November 2019. I bought it from a local enthusiast who was the second UK owner; the first owner was also based in Suffolk. I knew it was a very original example and I have worked hard at bringing it back, as near as possible, to stock.
I have the original German paperwork and invoices going back to 2008. The van originally left the factory in 1991 with a 2. 1 MV engine. In 2009 the first UK owner purchased a new Vege 2. 1 DJ engine from Just Kampers for £2307. 67. I contacted JK and I managed to get the paperwork for this purchase and I have the invoice for the engine install in December 2009. Unfortunately I do not know the current mileage of this engine as the speedo drive was broken when I purchased the van and looking at the MOT history it looks like it has not worked since it arrived in the UK.
Before I purchased the van the previous owner complete the following works and new parts fitted.
Full respray (LY3D Tornado Red) all windows removed
Rust free tailgate sourced and a new stainless ladder
New front windscreen & heated rear windscreen
New windows rubbers & chrome trim all around
Underseal wheel arches and underneath.
New Burley Motorsport rear wheel carrier
New Speed Shop stainless exhaust.
Respray engine protection bars.
New radiator, cab step rubbers, front & tailgate chrome VW badges, rear air intake vents, Hella rear light lenses, indicator lenses, Alpine USB / Bluetooth radio, front cab & centre rubber mats, twin washer jets.
Since owning the van I have carried out the following work…..
Remove & clean front diff and replace the worn speedo gear with a new brass drive (Brickwerks).
Reinstall front diff with good replacement OEM mounts.
Gearbox sent off to be cleaned inspected & resealed with a new Brickwerks gasket kit.
Drop fuel tank and treat the bodywork behind the tank, all in good condition.
Stainless fuel tank straps replaced with new stainless straps (Brickwerks)
New stainless fuel pump mounting bracket (Brickwerks)
Complete fuel line replacement with new (Brickwerks)
Injectors sent off for cleaning and testing, (Brickwerks fuel line & seals used)
New metal fuel filler neck installed
Replace power steering hoses (Brickwerks)
Strip and rebuild electric window motors and replace the window switches
Remove dash, clean and replace front blower (Brickwerks)
Replace electric mirror switch
New throttle cable (Brickwerks)
New rear difflock actuator (Brickwerks)
All 5 x 14” Syncro wheels balanced
Other jobs have included…… reinstalling the rear Caravelle seats and steam cleaning all the seats and carpets, new colour matched automotive carpet in the rear. Fitting new rear mud flaps from Schofield. New heater matrix for rear heater. New steering rack boots. New silver Syncro decals. New number plate holders and new tailgate struts.
All fluids have been replaced, coolant, power steering fluid, gearbox & front diff and engine. New fuel & air filters. New distributor cap, rotor arm & spark plugs. New rocker cover gaskets.
All works are documented on my 8090 and Samba build threads contact me for the links.
My plan was to sell the van last year but I wasn’t happy with the way the engine was running. I ran out of ideas to try so it went to a specialist. The van has just come back from having a full engine inspection and a complete electrical check using VAG diagnostic equipment. The hall sender wiring has been repaired, it’s had a replacement air flow meter, new coolant temp sensor, new lambda sensor (Brickwerks) and new starter battery.
The engine is running a lot better now and it has a fresh MOT with no advisories.
Odd items included: Webasto original water heater plus a second for spares or parts. Original Jail bars (not fitted as the new tailgate would need drilling), Tub of touch up paint. 3 van keys and one glove box key. Extra number plate for towing. Large folder full of receipts and invoices.
There is probably more that I have forgotten. The bad bits I’m aware of include: Heated seat switch works but the back of the seat does not get warm. The Webasto heater is not connected but it is included. ABS light stays on, may be a ring or sensor. One electric window motor is noisy but it’s been like that since rebuilding it. Some play in the clutch pedal which does not affect use.
Although this van is an excellent example please be aware that it is a 30 year old vehicle and it’s not perfect. Being 30 years old the interior has some wear here and there but it looks great for its age. If you have any questions please do not hesitate in contacting me.
The van is Sold As Seen. Located in the UK, Suffolk . Contact me to arrange a viewing from March 29th when restrictions change.
