1992 Audi 80 Cabriolet 2. 3E ‘Ted’
Manual in Laser Red
130, 000 miles
MOT to 11th June 2021
Welcome to the reluctant but sadly necessary sale of ‘Ted’ – a near 30 year old beauty co-driven by my girlfriend and I in finer weather
He’s a rare beast, being a very early Audi Cabriolet with the older 5 cylinder 2. 3 engine that performs as well as the 2. 6 V6 that followed, but with more ‘Classic Audi’ character and better fuel economy
The car comes with a full silver/ grey leather interior, and a manual roof
At this stage I will quickly point out that having spent considerable time with a few potential buyers seemingly expecting perfection, as per it’s price point and description – the car is not perfect.
It’s almost 30 years old, and has marks on the bodywork and interior that attest to this. I have provided a link below with a large number of photographs so please read through the whole advert and look at the photos before asking questions. I have kept on top of things mechanically, and it is very clean and solid underneath. I have a few walk around videos on my phone I am happy to send you, and if you are a long way away I will happily do a live walkaround the car for you through phone video.
Notable additions to Ted are:
• Almost new 17” Calibre Vintage (BBS style) alloys that were bought and fitted last August with brand new Davanti 225/ 45/ WR17 tyres all round (£800)
• New Sony Bluetooth stereo
• The classic Audi Sports steering wheel – an option when new, and one of the nicest steering wheels ever made
• Genuine Audi Cabriolet Wind Deflector
As a third car, Ted has been pampered accordingly in his time with us, and work in the last 6 months includes:
• Replace cambelt, water pump & thermostat
• Brakes stripped down, rebuilt and greased
• New radiator, thermostat, and repair to coolant flange at back of block
• Coolant flush and change
• Roof release mechanism repair
• Oil Service and filters
• A thorough machine polish to bring the red paint back to life
• Lots of other little tidying jobs along the way (work totalling £1300)
Although the history prior to my ownership is a little patchy, I have receipts for the following parts from 2019:
• Front Anti Roll Car Stabiliser Bush
• Front Shock Top Mount
• Front Brake Hose
• Bump Stop
• Tie Track Rod End
• Front Steering Rack Boot Gaiter
• A clear HPI check from 2015
The old chap I bought it from was a former mechanic and serviced the car himself
When I bought it, I had my own trusted mechanic go over it thoroughly and he did anything that was needed. I’m more than happy to for any prospective buyer to chat to him, and he will happily attest to the condition of the car as he has done everything for me on it.
The bodywork is very good, with barely any visible rust, save for a very small patch of bubbling near the drivers side front wing. The body has collected a few pin dents over the years that look like shopping trolley marks more than anything. It’s not flawless paint, upon closer inspection but there’s nothing terrible to report and there is zero lacquer peel or significant rust to report.
Interior wise, the leather has no rips or splits but could use a bit of revival with the right products where it got a little cold and damp over winter. The door cards are in great shape, however the leather could use tacking back in just above the door grabs. I didn’t notice it until a potential buyer who knows these cars well spotted it.
The electric windows, ventilation and gauges all work fine, and the car drives without any knocks or bangs with a strong and willing engine that sounds fantastic above 3000rpm.
Please remember it’s a 30 year old soft top, and hence prefers life under cover. The roof is in great condition but condensation and a few drips do get in during winter if left outside. I run it regularly to keep the battery in good shape.
The car will be sold on the 17” BBS style wheels in the photos, however if asking price is met I will include a very nice set of the original 15” Audi Ronal alloys that it came with (in one of the photos) that all have legal tyres on. The car rides equally well on both however the next owner may choose to put some winter tyres on the 15’s as I had planned to do (but never got round to it!)
It’s a good car, and my write up is a very honest one. A rough one of these might set you back £2k and you would need to spend what I have spent to get it to this standard. Or you can buy this one for less and it’s all ready to go for some summer retro fun!
Car is in Hitchin, Herts and the usual rules apply for viewings – namely proof of insurance on other peoples cars for test drives, visit alone, wear a mask and respect my time.
