102, 000 miles and the MoT expires in May 2022.

For sale is my 1994 Rover R8 218 SLD Turbo which I bought in August 2020. It came from a generic eBay wheeler dealer with copious amounts of turtle wax and back to black bumper restorer applied.

Unsurprisingly the ‘service history available’ transpired to be fake news – it has zero history at all. Judging by the MOT history it was owned by somebody who died with the car, if punch the numberplate into Google you can find a flickr image of it off-the-road in a car storage site. I am the first owner outside Peterborough!

Anyway, on purchase I changed the oil and got the garage to change all the belts (including the ever important timing belt), which of course on one of these means a coolant change and new water pump.

The car is very clean inside and out in my opinion. Underneath it has been undersealed at some point in its life so it’s either rust free or it’s all hidden under the underseal. Even the exhaust has had some sort of high-temp rust-proofing treatment. It has a couple of rust bubbles visible on the rear arches which haven’t really grown during my ownership. The electric sunroof works and does not leak.

Being a Rover, it has various faults. Those which I have identified during ownership are:

·   Rear RH door does not unlock/ lock on the central locking, although you can hear the motor whirring. The window is also stuck upright. Haven’t investigated either.

·   Key doesn’t fit in the driver’s door lock. Annoyingly this randomly happened during my ownership during a random journey – it’s not vandalism. However it has two working fobs and these are required to disable the immobilizer, so in reality you never have to use the key anyway.

·   The clock usually doesn’t work.

·   The radio randomly reset during ownership and now needs a code. The car came with its original manuals but annoyingly I can’t find the code written down anywhere.

·   Passenger sun visor thing keeps falling down.

Mechanically I can find no issues. This variant is refined and pleasant to drive. It has the Peugeot XUD7TE (turbo intercooled) engine which pulls brilliantly and produces no black smoke. I don’t drive very frequently and it starts first time, every time, even in freezing weather after being stood for a month. All tyres have healthy tread levels. During ownership I have averaged about 53mpg. The sunroof works and does NOT leak. I also have the rear headrests and parcel shelf which I forgot to put on when taking photos. This has been a great car to own, I just need the garage space.
