For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2 Ragtop in Marine Blue (1959)
MOT exempt. Tax exempt. Power Steering, 300tdi, Parabolic Springs, 5 speed gearbox. Rear Bench Seats with seat belts. Immobiliser.
We are delighted to present for sale this Land Rover® Series 2, which we have sold before. Due to a change in circumstances, we are now able to offer it for sale again, on behalf of the current owner.
This rare, early Series 2 (not 2a, number 242 off the line) has been built to use, and has a very rare and enviable spec. Although it appears to be a nicely presented, period Series 2, beneath the exterior lurks an amazing piece of kit. A 300tdi, highly acclaimed for power, refinement and reliability has been fitted. This gives modern reliability coupled with fuel economy twice one would expect. These engines are usually fitted to the old 2a box, which can lead to premature wear, but in this case, the 5 speed box associated with this engine has been cleverly incorporated, giving five gears (so no need for an overdrive) with constant four wheel drive and diff lock! This makes it very capable off road, quick and comfortable. To ease things further, there is power steering fitted, so anyone can drive this – it makes it feel like a defender rather than an old Series, it really is clever. To make it stop better, it has a larger master cylinder, and there are a full set of parabolic springs to further enhance comfort and ride.
On the inside, with the exception of a later steering wheel and a cigarette lighter, the vehicle still looks nice and standard, with three front seats all with belts, period dash and twin wiper motors. There are defender doors also fitted (expensive) to give wind down windows – a nice touch. The rear houses a set of bench seats to increase seating to seven occupants including the driver, also all with belts. There is a hidden immobiliser fitted to prevent theft.
Externally, this early 2 is very well presented, and the bodywork and canvas really do look good. A working front winch adds functionality, and the bonnet mounted spare and period plates add to the charm. There is a handy front tow hitch for forward reversing, and a rear towbar with pintle is also fitted. The canvas is new, and will benefit from a shrink once wet!
Out on the road, as one would expect, this drives like no other Series 2 you are ever likely to find. The combination of modern upgrades, all very expensive to fit, combine to give a modern, defender like comfort to proceedings.
In summary, this is a very rare, early 2, modified covertly to give an awesome drive, whilst retaining the period charm everyone wants. It has been rebuilt from rolling chassis in recent years, and so is as clean underneath as it is on top, and with that superb spec, should be great to live with – comfy to use, yet free from MOT or road tax – quick and reliable – 40 mpg and 70 mph ! This is, in our opinion, a real “keeper!”
As this is a private sale between you and the selling customer, there is no warranty implied or given by John Brown 4×4.
