We are delighted to present for sale this early Land Rover® 90, which has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis. This has been a vehicle owned by our workshop manager, Steve Penman – and he is now selling it to fund his Series 3 rebuild project from scratch, which we will be covering in intricate detail!
Externally, the bodywork has been resprayed in Land Rover® XS 2007 Stornoway Grey, and the vehicle sits on a set of 750 (235/ 85/ R16 Metric) Insa Turbo tyres. These give a good compromise between road holding and off-road ability, whilst also giving a nice, tall stance. Other external features include the numberplate on the bumper, rear bumperettes, rear mounted spare with John Brown 4×4 wheel cover and a towball with electrics. Side rails and side steps have been added for both protection against damage (for those wanting to use off-road) and easy access to the cabin.
The interior houses a pair of techno highbacks in the front, with a central cubby box for out of sight safe storage. The cabin has been fitted with a rubberised, heavy duty sound deadening set, with carpeting to the rear. There are sun-visors to the front headliner too, and even a clock! In the rear, a full set of side facing individual tip up seats are fitted, complete with seatbelts. There is a heavy duty floor mat fitted to protect the carpeting. Side windows have been fitted, which are also sliding, to give a station wagon effect – this means the cabin is airy and visibility is good too. This means this 90 can carry six people in relative comfort.
The reason we favour these older 90s is the simple mechanical engineering – the 200TDI engine is well known for being a strong unit, capable of doing huge mileages and also, with modern injection, means a vehicle more akin to modern reliability in terms of starting and owning longer term. This vehicle has been doing 20 miles a day until very recently – all dual carriageway at higher speeds with no issues. The added bonus of coil springs over the leaf springs or parabolics gives a much improved ride too. As this is a rebuilt vehicle, it feels well sorted and gives a good (1980s!) driving experience.
In summary, if you are looking for a Classic Land Rover®, but cannot really manage with the period reliability or driving experience, then this could be for you. With simple mechanical engineering, a galvanised chassis and a 200TDI engine, we believe this vehicle not only represents good value for money (when compared to older AND newer variants!) but it would also be ideal for someone wanting a more relaxed driving experience whilst still keeping authentic to the Land Rover® way! In addition, in just 3 years time this vehicle will be 40 years old, and therefore be both MOT and tax exempt too – adding further value and decreasing ownership costs in the future.
