EXTERIOR
This Mk2 GTI in Pearl Grey presents in superb condition throughout, the paintwork still retaining a deep metallic shine to each panel. It’s believed to be partially original paint, which is a testament to how well the car has been kept. The body kit has recently been carefully removed to check for the usual rust areas that are so often hidden away behind the plastic trim; thankfully, there was no corrosion to be found to the sills and arches. All the bumpers, wheel arch trims, and rubbing strips are still in really good order, free from any major scuffs or scrapes, and the lights are clear with no signs of moisture ingress to report. The underside is also in fine shape, remaining very solid having never required any welding.
INTERIOR
The interior space of this low mileage example presents particularly well. Upon close inspection there is none of the usual wear to the bolsters or seat bases; the dashboard and switchgear are also in superb condition and a period correct Panasonic stereo remains in place. The rear seats look almost unused and the headlining is perfect with no unsightly sagging issues. The boot area is also very tidy and still houses an undamaged parcel shelf.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The robust 1. 8 engine starts up first turn of the key and idles up to temperature without fuss. Benefitting from a recent re-commissioning in March 2021 this example is in fine mechanical condition. Engine work included a cambelt change, new water pump, thermostat, and new aux belts. Additional work carried out consisted of a fresh oil service, brake and gearbox fluid change, and replacement spark plugs. Most recently, upon arrival at 4 Star, the car has been fully inspected for the new keeper’s peace of mind.
WHEELS, TYRES AND BRAKES
Setting itself apart this GTI is fitted with the 15-inch steel wheels as opposed to the usual alloys, a very cool look in our opinion. Shod in quality Pirelli P6000 tyres all the wheels are in excellent condition throughout with the correct centre caps still present. Having recently been inspected and the fluid changed, the braking system is in fine operational condition.
HISTORY FILE
The GTI was first registered in January 1992; it was supplied new by VW Westmoreland Service Station in Bromley, their stamp can be found in the original service booklet. The car has now driven just 37k miles in the hands of only 3 registered keepers. The accompanying History File is complete with the original VAG document wallet, owner’s manuals, service booklet, a stack of specialist invoices, a raft of old MOT certificates to help verify the low mileage, and an original VW sales brochure and price list. A spare key is also present.
