For sale, very reluctantly, is my 1991 Golf GTI fitted with a GTI Engineering RE1900 of Silverstone fame.
The car was bought new from a dealership in Luton and then used as a company car for the first few years of its life, passing then through a number of doctors before eventually ending up in my ownership in 2012.
The car at this stage was used by myself as a daily driver and it received a lot of tlc during this time. I then used it solely for shows etc not long after, garaging it off the road during the winter months. It’s had too many new bits to list them all but the big jobs include;
- rebuilt alternator and starter
- new sills on both sides
- nee suspension all round and rear axle rebuild
- new fuel lines and pump
- interior refresh including headliner recovering
- scuttle panel repair
- refurbished BBS RA alloys
… and the list goes on and on. I’ve kept all the paperwork for any work done and I’ve now got three A4 folders full of docs, including mot certificates dating back to the 90s. It has had a lot of care and money poured into it in my 10 year ownership. I've service items here so the car will have a fresh change of oil before leaving. The Golf also has a current MOT to 08/ 11/ 22 - use vehicle enquiry service . GOV site to see. Please note, NI tests do not appear on the MOT history check web site.
I’ve always had the OEM+ mantra in mind and as such the Golf has only received good quality parts and very subtle mods. The only mods are the GTI Engineering RE1900 engine itself fitted when the car had about 160k on it, the Jetex aluminised twin exhaust, an ECU chip for increased torque and the Audi Quattro VDO gauges fitted in the centre console.
The engine was fully rebuilt by a friend of mine and I bought it from him when his project fell through so it came to me freshly rebuilt. I’ve got a lot of literature for GTI engineering that can provide all details of mods they carried out back in the day to the new owner, but long story short it has a gas flowed head, ported & polished, a Schrick fast road cam and the bottom end honed from 1. 8 to 1. 9. As such it makes around 145-150bhp when the ECU mod is taken into account.
The car is not mint and could really do with a proper cut and polish by a professional detailer. You will find the odd mark here and there but nothing that would scare people away. It’s a very solid useable classic that I’d be happy to jump into and drive literally anywhere.
The sticking point is that the car is on VCAR as a cat c due to a previous owner getting up close and personal with a jeep of some sort in a carpark in 2010 when it sustained damage to the wing. The owner at the time bought the car back from the insurance. The Golf was around 19 years old at the time so it would take very, very little to give the car a category.
This is a very reluctant sale, but due to minimal use and loss of storage due to other projects it’s going to go to waste in the driveway. Car is in Northern Ireland and comes with an NI mot. I can pick you up from the airport or docks/ meet you at them with the car. I’m only 15 minutes from either the port of Belfast or Larne so mainland access is very easy.
** The Golf now has MOT until 08/ 11/ 22**. The MOT will not show on the GovUK MOT history checker as it's a Northern Ireland test and our system doesn't speak to the mainland system, hence why it says MOT expired in 2012, this is not true and there are certificates to prove.
