This is a one family owned, garaged & pampered, non smoker Colorado car.
It was sold new by the Kumpf Motor Car Co. of Denver, CO.
This S-55 was specially ordered and built at the St Louis facility, and then delivered to Alex & Ruthie Greenmeyer of Denver, CO. on 7th September 1963 at an approximate cost of $3, 800.
They ordered an S-55 model. In addition to being a sportier/ performance model of the Monterey, the S-55 offered the "Breezeway" ventilation package as standard equipment. This feature was standard on all Monterey sedans & hardtops. This was the first and only year, the “Breezeway” option was offered for the S-55 Monterey 4 door sedan. Previously, in 1957 & 1958 Mercury had offered the “Turnpike Cruiser” model with a similar “breeze-away” feature.
1963 marked the first year of the different & distinct S-55 or “special” line designation. It joined the S-22 Comet & S-33 Meteor. This was a sport performance luxury vehicle. It is equipped with a 330HP, 390cui V8 “Super Marauder” engine. It is a completely “number matching” vehicle including the original 4 barrel carburettor.
The 4 door S-55 was the least produced of all Mercury’s for 1963, just 1203 cars!
Arguably, this was the best colour combination that was offered, synonymous with the 1960s and resurgence of art deco themes. Two tone paint is very rare on the S-55 models.
John Rotella, Director of - details above opines:
“No factory paint records exist for 1966 and older cars. 16 colours were available on the 1963 Mercury. If colours were equal in popularity, (which they were not,) that would mean approximately 75 of each. Then factor in two tone. Maybe one in ten had a two tone. My guess is maybe five cars were built in this two tone scheme.”
