1979 Honda Dream 400 Twin (not be confused with Superdream or alike)
I purchased this back in August 2021 from a shed where it had stood for the last 28 years – It has since undergone a sympathetic restoration to restore it to a level where mechanically and electrically it is utterly perfect with many new genuine Honda parts or OEM grade aftermarket parts.
However I have been careful not to ruin the patina of the bike , it will be a perfect bike for someone that wants to enjoy it for lovely rides or take it to another level of restoration and make it the ultimate restoration piece.
I firstly set about stripping all the panels off the bike and inspecting all the components that needed changing , I then cleaned everything to a point where it was clean but still retained a level of “old skool” classic patina.
The valve clearances have been inspected and checked and also the engine has undergone a full flush and service using genuine oil filter and oil. The Flywheel cover gasket was replaced along with the Oil filter cover and seal and also the filter bolt. Compression was also checked and all comes back healthy and within tolerance. I have also replaced the air filter for a genuine along with the spark plugs and plug caps to keep on top of the ignition system.
When I purchased the motorcycle the Keihin 31a carbs where in a poor condition and most of the parts where left in a carrier bag. I have stripped them and had them professionally ultrasonically cleaned and then rebuilt using genuine gaskets and parts and also genuine screws and bolts. New overflow hoses have also been purchased along with new manifold rubbers and airbox rubbers / new genuine clips. I have retained the standard size jets and needles to ensure the motorcycle runs as it was designed. I ensured I cleaned the fuel tank which happens to be perfect inside and no-rust whatso ever, I hen replaced the Petcock and filter too. I have also installed new throttle cables and throttle tube to ensure the throttle feels as smooth and as new as the day the bike left the factory.
The exhausts have also been replaced along with the collector box as the old ones had rusted through this is coupled to all new clips and collars.
Moving onto the brakes, the Dream was given a single calliper which when purchased was seized solid along with the Master cylinder which had all but rotten out. I have replaced the master cylinder with a new one along with a braided front line and a fully refurbished calliper using all new genuine seals and pads and piston. The rear drum was also seized and has since undergone full refurbishment, all the bolts and mechanism has been cleaned and greased as per the Honda handbook and new Drums installed.
Both front and rear sprockets have been replaced for new along with the Cush drives and chain, this means many miles of trouble free riding.
The front suspension has also undergone a restoration , it was fully stripped and cleaned / inspected then new genuine Honda fork oil seals and dust seals have been fitted and brand new oil to the right cc has been put into the forks. These compliment the comp star wheels which are in immaculate condition and are straight and true. I have also replaced the wheel bearings with genuine koyo bearings.
Riding the bike is a pleasure, it pulls perfectly and stops just as well, anyone that is into their classic Honda’s will know the Dream was only in production for an extremely short time (less than a year) before being superseded by the Super dream. This makes this extremely rare and very collectable with prices going up all the time.
