Fast, economical, inconspicuous. None of which are words that describe a P38 Range Rover.
But who cares when you have a thumping great V8 soundtrack and more leather than a country club smoking room.
Here we have a 1997 Range Rover P38, in 4. 6 V8 HSE flavour with a respectable 186k on the clock. This was my reliable daily driver for over a year covering nearly 6, 000 miles and only needing a belt tensioner in that time. Everything else I?ve done has been purely cosmetic or for preventative maintenance, this includes:
-New brake calipers front and rear + fresh fluid
-New brake accumulator sphere
-New Bearmach viscous fan clutch
-New belt tensioner
-New air conditioning condenser, dryer & 3 new hoses plus a regas (well over £400 spent, but a P38 with working A/ C is a rarity)
-Recent oil and filter change
-New fuel filter
-New anti-roll bar bushes and drop links
-New driver?s window regulator
-Recommissioned cruise control, retrofitted the later reliable ECU plus new vacuum lines
-New gearbox oil cooler temperature sensor
-New battery
-Head unit serviced by Clarion, security code removed and aux cable fitted, works perfectly and all 11 speakers sound amazing.
It?s worth noting that the service history prior to my ownership has been lost hence why I?ve done so much preventative maintenance, I have one or two old invoices, one being for a new fuel pump not long before I bought it. All invoices from my ownership will be provided as well as a disc full of photos documenting the work I?ve carried out.
The air suspension works perfectly, never ever had trouble with it, it can sit for days with no sagging or deflating. Included is a compressor rebuild kit for when it eventually needs doing.
Gearbox shifts buttery smooth, both high and low range work fine.
Engine runs spot on, temp gauge has never gone above half way.
Interior is very tidy for the mileage, usual wear on the armrests and driver?s bolster, but no rips and the leather is still nice and soft. All the electric adjustments and memory functions work (except the seat heaters, as usual). The carpets throughout have been cleaned and wet vacuumed.
MOT has now expired and car is on a SORN, could potentially put it through another test subject to discussion with buyer. Spent well over £700 on welding at a local specialists at the previous MOT, but it?s one less thing you now need to worry about, the remaining advisories are all minor patches to the non-structural areas, I told them to be thorough.
As you can probably see from the photos, the bodywork is far from perfect, there?s dings and scratches on every panel, it?s seen some off road action at some point (rightly so), not your usual pavement princess 4x4. There?s the usual corrosion to the lower tailgate as highlighted by someone?s attempt to spray over it, plus the bumpers which are scabby and again, several shades of green. The alloys are tatty to match, the tyres are old but not perished, plenty of tread left.
Usual P38 things to note:
-Comes with 2 keys, however they?re non-remote locksmith replacements. At some point the car has had the immobiliser disabled and the lock barrels re-pinned as I?m told the keys aren?t a standard Land Rover key code. The central locking works as it should from the driver?s door.
-There?s an alarm fault message on the dash, this is probably due to the previously mentioned immobiliser deactivation, or the cabin sensor which is known to go bad.
-The car is convinced fuse 10 is blown and will tell you every time you drive it, fuse 10 is fine as is the driver?s seat which it controls, just ignore it.
-Both heated seats no longer work as with most P38s by now.
-The climate control will occasionally throw the blend flap ?book? error symbol, usually on cold mornings but once everything warms up it?s fine. * UPDATE: it appears the LCD connector has started to fail and only a few segments are visible (on cold days only, apparently), cheap and well documented fix*
-The glovebox likes to randomly fly open and scare you to death.
-At some point the windscreen has been replaced with an aftermarket non-heated version.
-The headliner is pinned up at the rear and the sunroof cover is missing the material completely.
-The sunroof doesn?t work, one of the cables has seized so it needs replacing. It doesn?t leak and the switch has been disabled in the computer so the annoying ?sunroof not set? message doesn?t appear.
-The passenger side blower sometimes makes an awful clacking noise when on high speed, I?ll include a replacement motor with the sale.
-There?s the well known water leak into the passenger footwell, it?s only during heavy rain and only a slight drip, but it?s there.
-A few days before the MOT, I noticed the gearbox oil cooler had started weeping, it?s not bad enough to drip, but the underside of the radiator assembly is coated in oil. The replacement parts are readily available and not too expensive, it?s an afternoon?s work for the new owner, I?ve got to leave * something* for you to do, haven?t I?
I?ve tried to be as thorough as I can with the description, a large album of photos is available on request.
I also have a Nanocom diagnostic tool for sale, a must-have for these cars. Price to be negotiated on top of sale price, if required.
Viewing is welcome and recommended, it?s a 24 year old Land Rover after all?
Car is located in Handforth, Cheshire. Due to other commitments I?m not always there, so viewings would have to be by appointment on weekends, I work nights during the week so can be flexible with daytime viewings. Happy to answer any questions over the phone or by text/ email. Please check your spam folder if you send an email, for some reason my replies get picked up in spam filters. If you call and I don't answer, I'm more than likely driving so just leave a voicemail and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
