1993 Xantia 1. 9 TD VSX in day to day use. MOT March 2023. Just serviced.
One of the earliest Xantias in the UK - built June 1993. It is one of the 'sinker' Xantias with the hydropneumatic suspension that slowly sinks overnight like all the classic Citroens from the 50s through to the 90s. Only the first year of Xantia production has this characteristic after which the anti sink system was brought in. Makes the early cars unique and a bit more 'Citroenesque'. Popular 1. 9 Turbo Diesel with intercooler. Well known to cover over 250K miles.
The Xantia VSX was the top of the range Xantia in the initial line up. In addition to standard RHD Xantia kit:
remote locking and alarm, electric front windows and sunroof, the VSX has: 4x electric windows, electric and heated mirrors, ABS, front fog lights, variable speed wipers, outside temperature, Hydractive 2 semi-active suspension. Leather steering wheel, velour interior, reclining passenger seat (tilting) and alloy wheels.

Improvements and work done - heavily serviced over the 5 years I've owned it including new cylinder head gasket, skimmed and pressure tested cylinder head, new head bolts, cambelt full kit, 2x pulleys, water pump. New radiator, auxiliary belt, rocker cover gasket, refurbished rocker cover, diesel return pipes, refurbished diesel filter housing, refurbished thermostat housing and new thermostat, New battery terminals.
Recent 4 disks, pads, front ball joints, inner arm bushes, steering rack gaiters, inner and outer track rods, drop links, anti roll bar bushes, PAS pipe, rear arm bearings, 2x rear subframe mounting blocks, Front wheel bearings, new rear brake L & R pipes in copper nickel, 7 spheres for the hydraulics. All receipts present in the folder. Door locks replaced and extra key for them. Remote blip in good condition - was a lucky new find in 2016. Front strut tops checked and repainted. Both front strut pipes replaced, 4x ABS sensors.
Good economy for the age 45-50mpg easy. This engine can also run on new veg oil with no modification. Could run on waste oil with correct treatment. Nicely audible turbo sound.
Modified parts: 16” Peugeot wheels, aftermarket Pioneer USB/ bluetooth HiFi, Viofo A129 Duo dashcam GPS screen mount with rear camera (Front not supplied, swaps between my other car, C5 Can get on amazon). The Hydractive suspension front and rear regulator blocks are changed for the improved post-1999 design that work better. Hydraulic pressure regulator rebuilt, Front and rear suspension height correctors rebuilt with bespoke modified linkages including ceramic sealed bearings making it work like it left the showroom. Modified height corrector anti roll bar links replacing the notorious plastic link with double rose joints aimed at avoiding wear and free play - 2 years running and still good. Rear hatch is fitted with a spoiler from a Xantia Activa resprayed to match. Metal, slightly shortened gearstick. Air compressor horn fitted - single chord and road legal,
Sills, subframes, door hinges, Rear left wing panel, rear door closing panels all free of rust.
Door molding metal inserts replaced with laser cut stainless steel.
Negatives.
Mileage is 132K and going strong but there are a couple of scuffs and marks on the bodywork: front right wing has a scratch caused by my clumsiness while working on the car. There are some scratches at the lower front left bumper from the first owner - just haven't got around to fixing it yet. The rear hatch has the usual Xantia top coat crazing - partly covered by the Activa spoiler. The rear wiper works but not the washer jet. Rear parcel shelf chords are missing. Tiny amounts of rust creeping at the front wheel arches. Only seen up close. Locking works but sometimes the boot lock sticks.
