Description
Sunbeams were one in t he best car manufacturers in the 1920s. This 24hp model, designated 24/ 70, is an open tourer with the body made by Sunbeams and was the top of the range of models in 1924. It was exported to Canada and the Canadian owner sent it back to the Sunbeam works in 1932 to get it converted to Left Hand. After he died it was in the Alberta Motor Museum for several years before being re-imported into the UK and fully restored in the late 1980s / early 1990s. I bought the car in 1993 and have used it on many events in the UK, France, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Ireland. It is a delightful touring car with a 4. 5 litre engine, 4 speed gearbox, 4 wheel brakes with a servo and will cruise easily at 55/ 60 mph and do 16. 5 mpg on long journeys. I do not find that LHD is a problem in the UK and it is clearly an advantage on the Continent.
In recent years I have had the back axle rebuilt with a 4. 9 cwp ratio and new half shafts, new gears in the gearbox, new 20 inch Michelin tyres and a new hood and full tonneau. The car comes with fitted seat belts in the front and sidescreens, which I have used very seldom.
The paint is good but not concours and the interior buttoned leather is excellent having been renewed in the 1990s.
